156. I agree.

And, as much as it pains me to say this, I don't follow the Bedchel test either. Otherwise I would miss out on a ton of amazing movies. And frankly, modern movies don't have really interesting female characters that flow in the style of movies that I so love. Movies like Fight Club, 12 Monkeys, Salton Sea, Amadeus, Saving Private Ryan, Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang (Though I do love Harmony.) The only exception are the characters of Tarantino. God, I love his female characters. In fact, the last movie that I saw that I loved the female character it turned out that she wasn't a she at all. (Let the right one in.)

That's not to say I look down my nose at female characters in general. I love the female characters of old movies. Any female character on TCM beats the pants off of anything that is in theaters now.

Honestly, where are our modern Norma Desmonds (Sunset Blvd), Maudes (Harold and Maudes), Sugar Kanes (Some like it Hot), Baby Janes (Whatever happened to Baby Jane?) and Nurse Ratcheds (One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest)?

Think about your favorite female movie characters, how many of them are modern ones?

It's not meant as a "don't watch it", it's meant as a commentary on how poorly modern female characters are characterized, as compared to male characters. There is no reason why there shouldn't be as many female/female conversations as male/male.

Hope this helps.

I'm right at the screeching-harpy fore-front decrying the unfair disparity in leading roles for women, but you leave me slack-jawed in disbelief. In all of movie history, you think we've no women better than Jane Hudson and Norma Desmond? Seriously??

Well, those characters have stood the test of time. They are classics for a reason. How many modern characters will be able to stand up to the same test? How many characters in the last five years will be remembered fifty years from now? How many from the start of 2000 will be remembered simply ten years from now?
