That said, some diplomatists might disagree with me -- Diplomatics was originally conceived to be used on medieval documents, which all had very particular forms and rules for generating them. It's more difficult to deal with modern and postmodern documents -- especially with fiction.
As regards public domain works -- Jane Austen is still the author and writer of her original works. That doesn't change -- the thing that gets complicated is other officially published works.
As I said above, I'm not really trying to agree with the secret poster or whatever else, just thinking about all of this from the point of view of an archivist. It's not as simple as I made it seem in my original comment at all -- provenance and authenticity are issues and concepts that we will always struggle with.
