A near-future election (might've been the 2008 one, actually - the fic was written well before then) leads to an increasingly totalitarian regime. After the introduction of a shiny new set of broadcast censorship standards, Stephen delivers an impassioned monologue about free speech on his show before going MIA. Most people think he's just been "taken care of", but in 2016 Jon receives a cryptic message that recalls the last thing Stephen said to him. Cue a road trip in which he, Steve Carell, and Lewis Black follow the trail of clues Stephen is apparently leaving for them, while a secret government organization tries to track them down and possibly root out whatever underground resistance Stephen is involved with.

It was kind of a case of the premise sounding cooler in theory than in practice, as the fic itself featured our heroes using their real names in broad daylight (and possibly paying for things with their own credit cards - not sure about that, though, it's been a while), and generally making themselves less than a challenge to chase.

But I enjoyed it anyway, so it still sucks to have even the existing chapters Gone From The Internet.
