When thinking about ANY Doctor relationship I can never stop taking era of production into account. I weigh it against the Doctor as a character in general. In '65 they wouldn't have the same writing as in '75, or '85 or '05, but all those Doctors are supposed to, differences aside, be the same man. I think Ace and the Doctor would be written very similar to the way they were today as originally, with a few minor changes, but Jamie and the Doctor? The writing would be so very different and we would get to see so many different aspects of their relationship not afforded to sci-fi characters in the early sixties.

That being said, I do think, he "loves them all" but Ace takes top place in my mind. I just tend to put Jamie up there because him and Ace have such an almost completely equal relationship with the Doctor as any of the companions. (Sarah was always below the Doctor, Romana above etc)
