I am assuming it's baseball (I'm knee-deep in coding forms for work so "checked" meant something else entirely, and then the "swing" that came to mind was the playground kind, so I was also really bewildered for a second), but couldn't tell you which game this may have happened in. Presumably something was not called a strike that should have been. Or it was clearly a checked swing but got called a strike.

And this unfortunate call probably came where it had an impact on a close game's outcome, because this happens all the time in baseball but people rarely get really mad about it.

Unless I'm completely off and someone perhaps upholstered the playground equipment near OP's house in an ugly patterned fabric.

Yes, it was this. The Giants-Dodgers playoff series ended on a checked swing that got called a strike.
