As I said above I actually think it's a cusp issue. And I think a lot of 80s teen movies are intentionally backward-looking (and I think this is actually particularly true of Heathers, Fast Times is straight up about the early 80s and Hiding Out's premise pretty much requires a backward-looking perspective).

but frankly, I think we're going to disagree that movies set during high school are necessarily targeted toward teens in high school. i mean fast times is a rated r movie. my boomer mom and aunts and all their friends watched all those movies too, because they were the ones with disposable income. my gen x cousins watched 0 of those movies, because they were born late 70s.
