Call me a jerk, but you're an insulting asshole. To say that blindness is some sort of debilitating handicap is a load of bullshit. With the exception of the actual sight part, they do all of those things you've listed. Believe it or not, blind people do actually enjoy films and television and walking in the country, admiring nature. What a load of bullshit to imply that they can't. Obviously, you don't know any actual blind people, you're just another idiot on the web full of fear and prejudice.

Horrible handicap my ass. If I treated my friends like they were some sort of pitiable lepers they'd beat my ass within an inch of my life and I'd fucking deserve it.

You know, there's a middle ground between treating blind people like some sort of pitiable lepers and telling someone who's afraid to go blind to suck it up and stop whining.

It may not be the end of the world, but it can still be a traumatizing experience for someone who's used to having sight.

Will whining make their vision better? No.

Will my sympathies make them magically see? No.

Is my original advice realistic and practical? Yes.

They're not mutually exclusive. Seriously, it's not that hard to type "I'm sorry for your situation OP, you should go to a blind center etc etc". It's called being polite.

I wouldn't be able to do any of the things listed without sight and still retain the same level of enjoyment. I don't know what you mean by fear and prejudice. Fear of being blind? Yes! Yes, I am afraid of going blind! Why? Drawing is my favorite hobby and I'm going to pursue a career in film editing. I love looking at paintings and have prints and posters all over my walls. I've always been a very visual person and I love looking at color and movement and the like. I enjoy nature by looking out over fields or at trees in autumn or out over the ocean or at any of the weird insects we get out here. I love it. Hearing and having a tactile sensation of my world is still important, but my perceptions of everything minus sight would be drastically different.

If I wanted to be an athlete, I wouldn't want to be paralyzed. If I were a musician, I'd have a fear of going deaf. I'm not afraid of blind people, I don't hate blind people, and I don't think that blind people are pitiful or subhuman. I just thing that blindness itself is awful and not something you can just immedeately get over or that the loss of sight isn't a scary thing to go through.

I don't know any blind people, but I do know know paraplegic, deaf, and mentally handicapped people. They can still smile and laugh and enjoy life, and they can still lead happy and productive lives. I still have a deep respect for them and love them for who they are. I understand that they're people and I don't act in a patronizing manner or act like they're less of a person for what's happened to them or how they were born.

That doesn't change the fact that they are handicapped. It's ridiculous to assert that blind people or any of the other aforementioned people live precisely the same life as someone who is able to function to a fuller extent of human capability. They're going to face more risks and difficulties than I as I am now will never have to confront. I admire people who still succeed despite those difficulties, but I'm not going to insult someone who doesn't want to have to face them.

If you're asserting that just because I took a point opposite yours when you told someone afraid of losing their sight to suck it up and consider being blind something that is difficult to go through that I have nothing but pity for the blind or that I am prejudiced against them (what?) then you're missing what I said entirely.
