Yes, that's exactly how I'd react. I'm sure I'd be depressed as hell, but the bright side is that I wouldn't die! The bright side is that I know where to go to get help. I know the right people to turn to to deal with it. To pretend that it's the end of life is insulting to all the people that already live with blindness.

The thing here you're missing? NOBODY HERE IS CLAIMING BLINDNESS IS THE END OF LIFE. Seriously, we're not. It's not like dying, but it's still not sunshine and flowers.

You said it yourself: you'd be depressed as hell. Do you seriously think that someone who might be going blind does not deserve a little bit of sympathy?

You are all treating it like it's the end of the road, like I should pity someone and feel sorry for them and offer them my deepest sympathies. No.

Offering sympathies in such a case is completely useless. It's not giving anyone their sight back.

I was completely realistic in my original reply. Should they go blind they'll head off to a center, learn to keep trucking and get on with life. The end.

No, it's not. It's really, really not.

Of course it's not going to give anyone their sight back. It might however, make them feel slightly better. Sometimes, even something useless like "I'm sorry for your situation" from a stranger on the internet can make someone smile, as silly as that sounds. How do you think that telling the OP, "shut up, it's not the end of the world" is going to make him/her feel?

I understand what you're saying. I've known blind people, too, and I'm perfectly aware that they're far from helpless. But you're coming off as a callous douche. There's a big difference between sympathy and pity. One is more welcome than the other.

What is the end of the world, then? All you've compared it to so far is death.

His/her point of view is that people often associate blindness with being a horrible, dehumanizing fate. S/he is just indulged in an extremely defensive reaction to something that no one ever implied because s/he is reacting to ableist attidues in our society which aren't really reflected in this post.
