How do so many people miss this:

Benny: "This past year's rent, which I let slide..."
Mark: "Let slide?! You said we were golden!"
Roger: "When you bought the building!"
Mark: "When we were roommates!"

So, Benny, their friend, said they could live there for free for A YEAR. Now he suddenly goes back on his word, and wants rent money. Not for the month, but the whole year. That day.

That's a problem.

Thank you for this. I forget other people haven't been listening to the soundtrack since 1996, seen it live twice, and own the book and have read it cover to cover at least twice like me. And maybe you? lol

Lucky. I never got to see it on Broadway, but the traveling company came to my city twice. The second time was sad b/c the Angel wasn't as fabulous as the original or even the one I had seen live a few years before that.

I'm still wondering why the entire rest of the neighborhood decides to join them in lighting things on fire and chucking them off the balconies. They can't all have been Benny's roommates. Unless that's just a musical being a musical for dramatic effect.
