You know... I've always wondered about this particular argument. Why is it that the first jump/insult people fire off is that anyone posting anonymously is automatically a coward?

First off, the internet is one big flaming pile of anonymity that everyone takes advantage of to varying degrees. It's the appeal of the electronic veil and no one is immune.

Second, the assumption that in order for an opinion to have genuine merit or weight, the person giving said opinion MUST reveal their "true identity." I've watched so many of these nonsense back-and-forths, and the responses are practically formulaic. No one has any obligation to reveal who they are to anyone online. And frankly, most of the anonymous blokes I've met do so as a way to avoid blazing drama. Before you say: "what drama?" consider just how quick people (especially BNFs) tend to point everyone they know online at the perceived "offender du jour" and encourage them to stir up trouble at their expense.

I suppose the short version of all this is that it makes no difference that the poster is anonymous. If you continue to respond to them in an attempt to get the last word and/or figure out who they are, you're just reinforcing their own opinions and decisions to post anonymously.

If you really don't care, just ignore them.

After all, sometimes silence really isgolden... and provides fewer opportunities for comment "wars."
