Isao Takahata once wisely said:

"Try to remember one thing, the most important part of my work: it is not the real, nor even the relationship with the real; it is only the line and the way of drawing."

The human part of media is in the emotion and ideas behind the construction as a construction rather than in the allusions to any kind of external reality. That which is represented is irrelevant, content is found in the way of the representation. Ultimately, the sculpture of poo is more humane because it is more expressively constructed and contains true passion behind its craft.

Gurren-Lagann's content was the necessary struggle between the future and the past and their reconciliation in the creation of tomorrow. This content wasn't poo because it was well thought-out and structured in a way that works effectively in both text, subtext and context. I already explained above why is it so. The quotations to Getter Robo's Getter Rays, for example, are a simile to Simon's own use of Lord Genome's Cathedral Terra. And then you have Kamina STEALING Gurren and creating Gurren-Lagann by combining it with Lagann, a plot-point that could easily symbolize taking an idea that wasn't yours in order to tell your own individual story. This clever way of telling the story is what makes it so satisfying and entertaining. And this is just the tip of the iceberg, just explaining how text relates to context; you also have the rich ever-present subtext that delivers a compelling experience.

Take the first episode, think of the gag sequence in which Kamina and Simon ride the molepigs in an attempt reach the surface and how much we are told in such a quirky and innocent set-up. Through Simon's own nihilism we are able to understand the current state of humanity, hopeless and without expectations; through the village elder we get a first hint at the main motif behind the antagonists the heroes will struggle against, superiors of wisdom burdened by their own responsibility and with the intention to do whatever it takes to ensure the survival and well-being of their protectees; through Kamina's hot-headed sense of justice and rebellion we discover the will of the youth, the hopes that still exist in those that are yet to be born.

And Nia is a well-constructed character due to her mannerisms and clear interactions with both the world and the cast. She has a wide variety of idiosyncrasies that give her charisma and make her stand-out. And I think it is wonderful that spectators are able to understand, through actions alone, the way in which she creates her screwy notions about reality: she easily captures the meaning behind abstract ideas but she finds it hard, and doesn't even realize she finds it hard, to bring these ideas into something more practical and specific. No exposition was needed yet it completely justifies even the most basic trait given to the character; not to mention it makes for a fun variety of possibilities in dialog writing.

And you're not mentioning flaws. You're just describing subjective perceptions.
