147. I think Anna is probably one of the most useless characters SPN has ever introduced. Maybe she'll be useful later, but really? She annoyed the hell out of me. I don't think the actress played her was good at all, she was basically a Mary Sue, and that sex scene was the lamest shit ever. And it's not because I ship Dean/Castiel and Sam/Dean - which I do. I like Ruby in the sense of what her character brings to the show , even if I think Genevieve isn't the best actress we've had for her. I liked Bela for the same reason. I liked Jo too. Anna is just...crap.

So, yeah, to 147 and 161 - what are you thinking, seriously?

I don't think she was a useless character in general. I think that they wasted the opportunity to use her effectively in that episode and introduced her in too much of an overblown way and made her hard to swallow. Particularly since the episode itself had so much going on already.

Which is why I would love to see her back in a more subtle role on the chance that they'll write her in a way that fits her properly into the storyline. I find she has a lot of potential as a character and her relationship with Castiel can lend her a more interesting angle than "the angel that made lovey eyes at Dean and had bad sex with him."

You may not care for Anna's role, but I don't think you can claim Anna was useless--she and Dean served as foils for Ruby and Sam. No great depth of character, maybe, but she doesn't need depth in order to serve a purpose. Literature is littered with character-types and one-dimensional characters in order to advance the story and/or in order to act as a sounding board for the main character(s). If this is bad writing, then it is in great company with a long tradition.

ITA. Anna served multiple purposes, actually; the primary one being, I would say, to provide us (and the boys) some info about Heaven and the angels. Besides that, she was the thematic counterpart to Sam/Ruby, like you said (though the Dean/Castiel shipper in me protests that the parallel already exists with Castiel), and, also, I think she was there to shed some light on Castiel and where his story is going.

ETA: Oh, and I don't know the details about what's gonna happen when Anna shows up next, but I think the potential is exciting. She's a rogue angel. She could throw a spanner into the works.
