101. Oh man, I can see how that would be a problem because THAT is one bitching toy.

102. Wow. This is the first time I've even heard the word "yonic". Sanskrit word for "vaginal"? Anyhow, does this mean tension that is swept away is a metaphor for sex for women being like having a lot of build-up that leads to nothing, or does the female orgasm just don't feel like anything when it arrives? I mean, talking about a shows climax and build-up like it's sex feels a little... off, somehow. I think I'm lost. And confused. And that THAT doesn't bode well for my future sex-life.

Also which pacing is it that you really prefer then, the yonic or the phallic?

116 ... Huh. He truly could be. Not that I really care since he wasn't in any real pairings I am emotionally invested in.

127. In the meanwhile, I, a Swede, is sitting here wondering just... how the HELL a relationship like that even happened. Because our two countries are not lovey-dovey with one another. Heck if anything, I'd see Sweden having troubling, problematic relationships with everyone because he's so non-committal.

133. Tell me who this woman is, because for some reason I can see it and love it already, just from the scorn in their eyes.

145. Holy croc are those litte things conjoined by their genitals or hips?

It's pretty much fanon rather than canon, I think. There really isn't much about them in the actual comic strips, and most of the time it's Sweden going "u r mai waifu" with Finland looking like he wants to cry. (Mind you, they do own a dog and adopt Sealand, but it's just crack more than anything.)

Re: 127

Ha ha, Sweden thinking he's all that on the other hand, that I can agree with. But honestly, the biggest point of contention with me here has got to be Finland. I know that a lot of this stuff is fanon and "what are you gonna do", but over in these parts, our image of Finland is SUPREMELY FUCKING MANLY.

Like, the mental image of Finland we have would be more like Fist of the North Star's protagonist than the shoujo-esque waif I see in the comics. Eh fights Russia and isn't afraid of anything. Finland has the baddest sniper, a strong international presence, and many, many myths on how it is a country filled with roughnecks who hunt their own food armed with nothing but a knife and vodka to act as a painkiller for their eventual wounds. If they don't drink it all first, that is. I suppose those kind of rumours have as much to do with reality about as much as Hetalia's image, but it's really weird to see it portrayed the way it is.

Re: 127

(Anonymous) 2009-03-03 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god, the image of Hetalia's Finland morphing into Fist of the North Star-type just broke my brain.

But I agree, Finland is actually pretty fucking badass and manly. My guess is probably people thinking "LOL colonized for god knows how many centuries, so I guess you're Sweden's bitch" when it's... er, not really like that.

Re: 127

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure that anyone who has ever studied Finland during WW2 knows his name now, but I'm just saying: Simo motherfunksting Häyhä. (http://www.badassoftheweek.com/hayha.html) Sweden did NOT spawn this badass sniper, Finland did, and Finland kept Russia at bay. Let me reiterate: a small guy, ripped and trained and all but still kind of on the small side, goes up against something that should by all means be a gigantic titaneous mountain of a man, and kicks his ASS. Utterly and completely. If that doesn't sound like Fist of the North Star's common "You may be like five times my size but I'm going to punch you in the gut and your whole stomach will explode" fights, I don't know what does.

And yeah... Sweden did a lot of colonization over the years, but then we went and gave/lost them all because, really... we were out of the game . Neutral, not going to conquer or expand our nations borders anymore, not playing with you anymore etc.

Also I wonder if an eventual "Sweden's childhood" story will include the vikings... since really, they would not be a part of 'Sweden the nations' history. Vikings were like the Holy Roman Empire to today's Sweden, if anything. Or maybe Rome to today's Italy would be a better simile... maybe I should just start reading Hetalia more so I can actually know what I'm disussing.

Holy shit, that guy is insanely badass. I wish I could be like him.

And now I'm totally tempted to write badass!Finland fic to fill the void. I would have done something like that earlier as I'm sort of meh on Finland's general characterization even as I'm totally enslaved by the fluff, but hey, better late than never?

This comment made me really happy. Hetalia and some other things on the internet have really made me wonder about Finland's image, so it was good to know that at least some think of Finland this way.

This isn't the first time I've seen you leaving interesting comments You seem to be a great guy, so keep it up!

I think she means this:

Yonic Pacing: slow build-up, with loads of tension, no structure to its progression, randomly organized.

Phallic Pacing: clear-cut introduction-buildup-climax-resolution that goes straight to the point.

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
... Actually, the metaphors I understood. The part that stood out to me was how the OP makes it sounds like, with the "progress begins and is then swept away", women do not feel anything when they climax. From the words here, it seems as if they made the connection that "phallic pacing" mirrors the man's climax, we thrust it in and keep going until we reach orgasm. And somehow, her likening those shows who just go on and on made me feel as if she was saying that women never "climax", or reach anything resembling a sensation of release.

I may be looking to far into this.

[identity profile] 7thisgod.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought she meant that stories with "yonic pacing" have multiple climaxes before cooling-off and ending while stories with "phallic pacing" have a single climax after which the story ends.

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh, that makes sense. Several plotlines that can have several points that we can consider to be "climaxes", with not one "climax" being the truly MOST important or significant, whereas the "phallic pacing" is a storyline working towards just one, pivotal and significant end?

[identity profile] 7thisgod.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, that would be exactly it.

[identity profile] ember-reignited.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
133. She's the House Representative for the DC area, though I don't recall her name off the top of my head. They first appeared together when Stephen was doing Better Know a District. He mocked her about not having a vote in the House, she gave him a tongue lashing in response. One of those cut-the-tension-with-a-knife atmospheres. Since then, she's been on the show a few times to represent the liberal side of a debate, and she almost always hands him his ass. She's terse, caustic, absolutely venomous with him. Which is how you know they're actually pretty good friends when he's out-of-character.

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I have got to get this on Youtube. I don't think I can afford to miss such smoldering awesomeness.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
That is an interesting point. I like to climax when I'm having sex, personally.

I also have a problem when people try to gender things. Like all people of the same gender think and act alike or something.

Re: 102

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
As was stated by another poster above, they most likely meant that the "yonic pacing"-shows were about the fact a show can have several plotlines with several different climaxes, like women can have multiple orgasms, rather than how men can have just the one, which means "phallic pacing" is about everything in a story working towards just one ending.

And here is the part where I sheepishly admit that, really, I have very little knowledge about matters regarding gender roles and storyline pacing and anything relevant to this discussion. I do not know a lot of terms, theories or the history of either subjects, I am nothing but an amateur who likes to debate in order to hopefully learn. I can't honestly make a judgment either way on how "appropriate" it is to think of pacing as having gender biased, whether it is just needless navel gazing in the end or a valid discussion we need to have. All I can really muster for an opinion, is that it seems like with so many issues in the world, shouldn't we worry about things on a more... human interest-level, rather than worry about whether a storyline's build-up and progression is influenced by penises or vaginas?

Re: 102

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I just think it would've been better to talk about two different ways to tell a story in way that wasn't directly related to one's sex, that's all. Just because I have a vagina, doesn't mean I automatically relate with one style of storytelling over the other, or necessarily find this "yonic" style pacing to be outwardly feminine (in fact, a lot of sci-fi is paced similarly, and that's not a genre that exactly caters to women).

And what the hell, responding to 157

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2009-03-03 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
So I'm a dude. Mark my words, the way them things portray penises is way not how most of them appear. Not gonna go into TMI about the shape of my other appendix, but suffice to say: genitals rarely look pretty, and the way most people draw them are not how a real one looks like. It's the same way for both men and women, and really... try not to sweat it so much. If you can be confident about your breasts, which is what most culture make a big bally-hoo about, I think you shouldn't be worried about your genitals either.
