I think there's a reason for Katie's occasionally shaky performance on the show and that's simply experiance - or rather, her lack of it. She's not the youngest actor but she's the one who's been in the game for the least amount of time. At the last count, I think she'd been in three things - all but one bit parts - before she landed this role, and she'd never been to any kind of theatre school. She's NEVER had formal training, unlike every other member of the cast. She's never done theatre. She didn't even MEAN to get into acting until a couple of years ago. If you look at the resumes of the other main four, they ALL went to drama college, they've ALL got screeds of stuff they've been in even if it's just theatre - they've ALL been acting since they were in their teens. By comparison, Katie is EXTREMELY inexperianced. It's no wonder she's not as self-assured as the others.

Also, if you listen to the audio commentaries, Katie makes a comment in one of them about how embarassed she is by some of her scenes in 1x04 - specifically the 'he's a lover' line (with reguards to Merlin). She says that she did that before she realised that she could object to certain lines if she thought they were out of character or not coming off properly. Again - it shows a basic lack of confidence on her part; she's clearly still learning whereas the others are all already on top of their game.

Bottom line - Katie's a young inexperianced actress who landed a big part maybe a bit before she was ready to tackle it, but actually I don't think she's handling it at all badly given the circumstances. Some of her emotional stuff jars a bit - she definitely does sarcasticly mocking better than she does sentimental concern - but I genuinely thought her performance in the last two episodes of the series were REALLY good (at least they showed a good deal of imrpovement). I reckon she'll catch up with the others - she's just having to make up for about ten years of experiance in theatre and tv and drama school that she doesn't have.

lol, thanks for not just saying that i'm crazy or don't know what I'm talking about - that's kind of why i don't say anything to anyone else about it, because I got a feeling people would jump down my throat. but i knew she seemed kind of off in some of her scenes. it's not that i don't like her, and i really think her character's fascinating but sometimes the way she says her lines is distracting.

anyway, i didn't know she was so much less experienced than the others. that actually explains a lot. plus she was given some pretty difficult stuff for a first-timer to handle. here's hoping she keeps getting better. :)

Nah, I don't think so. I mean, it certainly wont have HURT that she's that pretty - but they would have been looking for someone gorgeous to fill that roll anyway - it's MORGANA; she's MEANT to be beautiful. They could have hired ANYONE on looks alone, but they hired Katie, who is genuinely talented (if inexperianced) and enthusiastic and clearly puts a lot of thought into her performance (watch her interviews on the DVD extras and listen to the commentaries if you don't believe me - she seems to analyse EVERY aspect of Morgana's character). Besides which, I genuinely don't think that Katie's a bad actress - inexperianced, yes, but not bad. She's absolutely fine most of the time - just occasionally flounders with the heavier emotional stuff, which frankly, anybody would if they didn't have the training for it - but she improves drastically anyway.

And I doubt they actually GAVE her the heavier emotional stuff to deal with in the auditions, since most of that doesn't come till later in the series so it wouldn't have been written at the time she was auditioning. They would have screen tested her with Arthur, Gwen, Merlin and Uther - and she plays sarcastic, sweet, intrugued and angry (respectively) well, so it's not hard to see why she got the part on that front. She gels with the other cast members - that kind of chemistry is important.
