It doesn't mean a damn thing about the quality of the ship, just the quality of its fandom.

That statement is kind of contradictory, because that particular ship wouldn't even exist without fandom. There sure as hell isn't any basis for it in canon.

Sure there is, as much as there's a basis for any pairing that has characters who interact in canon. Whether you see chemistry or not is a matter of interpretation. Mohinder and Sylar, I ship in a gen-like way. That is to say, I liked their canonical (platonic) relationship in seasons one and two - a mutual fixation, intimidation and mind games, Mohinder's bitchiness and defiance and Sylar's violence, etc etc. I loved their interactions. I wanted to see them interact more. "Basis in canon" is kind of meaningless when taken beyond that. I'm not arguing that the writers or the actors were intentionally implying that Mohinder and Sylar are ttly hawt for each other, because that's beside the point. So yeah, I can say that there's a discrepancy between the quality of the ship (the relationship between Mohinder and Sylar, which is antagonistic and which I think is ace) and the quality of the general fandom (which is filled with badfic and people who seem to think that they're capable of a happy ending and should be 2gethah 4evah and are fluffy, somehow), because I'm talking about their canon dynamic, not the imaginary one where they're boning alla time, and that isn't defined by the fandom.
