Favorite Musicals

(Anonymous) 2021-10-21 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Adaptations count!

List all of your favorite musicals. Bonus points for listing your favorite casts, or fantasy casting.

For example:

Death Note the Musical 2015, with Urai Kenji.

Sound of Music, the Lord of the Rings musical, West Side Story, Sweeney Todd, Hairspray, Lion King musical, Little Mermaid musical, really any of the Disney stories turned into musicals, Newsies, Oliver!, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Aida, Annie, Brigadoon, Dreamgirls, In the Heights, Les Miserables, the Pirates of Penzance, HMS Pinafore (I just really love Gilbert and Sullivan music, though these two are my favorites, I like most of their stuff),

I love the Music of Wicked but don't love the actual play itself given how many liberties it takes with the story, though I don't hate it the way I hate the book.

Into the Woods - I saw the 1991 recording with Bernadette Peters as the witch along with Chip Zien and Joanna Gleason as the Baker and Baker's Wife and just fell in love with it. I still have a copy of that recording on DVD and watch it for the nostalgia.

Same can be said for the 1998 recording of Cats.

Recent love is Six the Musical

Hard Day's Night, Help and Yellow Submarine, the original version of Hairspray but not the remake, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Rocky Horror, Phantom of the Paradise, Singing in the Rain, Reefer Madness, West Side Story, Scrooge and I know there's some I forgot.
Fantasy casting: I liked the Producers but didn't like Matthew Broderick in it, his role should have been played by Robert Sean Leonard.
I have another idea about fantasy casting but it involves someone who's really unpopular here so I'm afraid to even mention this person.

Oliver!
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - I know it's not the pinnacle of musical movies or adaptations, but damn if the songs aren't catchy AF
Victor/Victoria - though it's kind of all over the map in regards to sexual orientation and gender identity

I have no idea if this would really count, but years ago I saw a community theater stage version of A Midsummer Night's Dream that had Doo-wop songs in it that was surprisingly good.

OP here.

Yes, it does count. I said adaptations were more than welcome.

Do you remember the name of the production? It sounds fascinating.

ayrt

I think it was a Mesa Encore Theatre production and it was just called A Midsummer Night's Dream - the music came as a surprise, a good one, but a surprise.

I do get Truly Scrumptious stuck in my head on a semi-regular basis for no good reason. However, the fact that Dick Van Dyke is the only member of his movie family (including his dad) to not have an English accent makes me think that someone put their foot down after Mary Poppins, lol.

All of my favorite musicals would be a long list and I need to get at least some sleep, so all time fave: ALW Phantom of the Opera. Yeah, I have no taste, oh well. (ALW is a plagiarist and a rich shitbag, though.)

Favorite cast I actually saw was Lisa Vroman and Brad Little in San Francisco. I've seen it, idk, 20 times, but the restaged tour only once because ugh. Last time I saw the original staging was at the closing of the last US replica tour in 2010 and the Phantom sucked, but it was Halloween in LA so there were audience members in random costumes which was fun.

(Also Ramin Karimloo--saw him live twice each as Raoul and the Phantom--made a way way better Raoul than Phantom, and Gerard Butler sounded like the Scottish version of Bulwinkle the Moose.)

Favorite no one's heard of: Lucky Duck, where the ugly duckling is discovered by a wolfy talent scout and leaves the farm to be a singer.

Opinion that'll get tomatoes thrown at me: I enjoyed the professional stage production of RHPS I saw over the film at least partially because I liked the actors' voices more.

Really excited about: the upcoming film musical adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac with Peter Dinklage as Cyrano, even though apparently his voice is only okay.

Rocky actually has a personality and a lot of dialogue in the play. He also knows Frank created him to be a human sex toy and he is not happy about it.

The already made my fan-cast musical. It was called The Return of Captain Invincible and had Christopher Lee as a singing supervillain.

All superb choices. I've always loved The Great Muppet Caper but never really thought of it as a musical. It totally is though.
