I think that the character is weird-enough looking that he can be off-putting, but he's got enough human characteristics to be endearing. That always seemed to be his appeal; he falls into that part of the Uncanny Valley where the odd and the humanistic meet. If it had been a little bit more on either side, then the movie wouldn't have made eight hundred million dollars worldwide when that still meant something. (Not to mention all of the life-sized E.T. plush dolls that were sold around the release. I still want one of those, and it's been twenty-five years.)
