105. YANA, OP. Oh my god did that movie traumatize me.
111. Fill me in, Merlin fandom: is someone equating "non-slash" with "homophobia" again, or is the place actually offensive?
114. *sigh* If you are putting it out there, you are subjecting it to criticism. End of story. Same with playing cards, knitting, or any other hobby. If you don't want someone to crit you on your fic or art or whatever, keep it on your hard drive, which shouldn't bug you if it's just for fun. If people bash you for no good reason, that sucks, and they're jerks, but if someone's legitimately trying to help you get better, LET THEM. They're doing it for you.
119. Trufax. *sigh* And it's cancelled now, so.
129. Yeah, this a little bit.
140. WAT.
156. Oh dear, can never unsee. That would be frigging amazing, though.

[identity profile] otempora42.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
The place isn't offensive. It's just someone complaining about there being a percentage of fans who don't like slash. OH EM GEE. /sarcasm

[identity profile] llivla.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, that's good. I was wondering myself, because there are communities that ARE offensive in a few other fandoms I've been in with in the past, but Merlin's been such smooth sailing (everynexeveryone is loveee) I was a little shocked to see the secret.

[identity profile] otempora42.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm not actually a member of the comm (it's mostly Arthur/Gwen fans, which I don't really like), but there doesn't seem to be anything REALLY bad going down -- just a little bit of a persecution complex.

Everyone/everyone is great. :D

[identity profile] gnimaerd.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
The comm isn't BLATANTLY offensive, but the attitude of the mods is squicky. They tend to jump down the throat of anyone who so much as MENTIONS slashy subtext (I don't think you'd threaten to ban someone from a slash community for jokingly bringing up the sexual tension between Arthur and Morgana...) Plus, calling it a 'haven' is on the icky side. It's the whole 'SAVE US FROM TEH GAY' attitude thing, which is frankly irritating.

[identity profile] llivla.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you have a link to that? I'm looking through the comm/comments and I can't find anything yet.

[identity profile] gnimaerd.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry... the mods might have deleted it, maybe.

I just went over there to check it out, as I'm not in the fandom...and it looks completely non-offensive, unless you interpret (paraphrasing here) "This is a comm for Merlin het, plz do not be posting slash or femslash here." as homophobic.

Re: 111

[identity profile] oldstarnewshine.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, okay-- this reminds me a lot of Torchwood fandom, where the overwhelmingly prevalent pairing is slash, they made a comm for other pairings, and people cried homophobia. It's just making the less popular stuff easy to find, ffs. :\

Re: 111

That's what I thought. It's just that slashers won't list all the pairings in their fic most of the time. I remember that in Harry Potter fandom. Reading fic with what used to be my OTP, and BAM! Remus/Sirius out of nowhere.

111 OP

(Anonymous) 2009-03-04 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no problem with promoting het, I'd love it if more people wrote my pairing (Uther/Morgana), but that comm is definitely on the verge of offensive. No mention of any slash/gay relationship, even in the background or alluded to, and anyone who's ever written slash gets told to watch their words if they want to join. After that, I really didn't care to join anymore.

The secret isn't about getting (con)crit, though. It's about looking down on people for what they produce. Militant Anti Mary-Sue Societies, comms dedicated to mocking badly written fic... basically, the asshats who make themselves feel good by talking down on others. There are plenty in fandom, and more often than not they are not in it to help you improve.

Re: re 14

[identity profile] oldstarnewshine.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess you could read the secret that way. The fandom I'm in right now is having a lot of issues separating the two, and there's massive wank over it, so I sort of assumed the secret was about all that garbage-- I could definitely be wrong. But there is a lot of entrenchment in fandom about not being allowed to say ANYTHING that isn't 100% nice about someone's fic. Yes, people shouldn't bash, but the massive overreaction to anything negative is not helping anyone either, IMO.

"I judge you if you look down on people for..."

Yeah, I think it's safe to read the secret that way, since that's what it says. :P

Re: re 114

It's happened to me more than once but one day, it finally dawned on me that my work was chosen instead of someone else's was because it was indeed terrible. Instead of crying my ass off to gain sympathy like I used to, I spent the energy on making my next project better. To everyone's surprise but my own, the reception was phenomenal.

There will always be assholes online, offline, inside or outside of fandom. What makes a difference is how you react to them.

Re: re 114

(Anonymous) 2009-03-05 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
So the right way to react to people who think they have the right to disrespect because you don't please them is by... getting better at pleasing them?

Yanno, taking concrit in stride is one thing. But letting assholes be assholes and taking all the blame for being abused for your "failings" instead of reminding them of basic civility will only make things worse.
