105 No shit! That movie scared the living shit out of me, especially the part with the contamination suits, and the end of the movie when E.T.'s people come back for him. :shudder:

129 Well, don't let them turn you off to the idea. That's all I can say. Unless you enjoy making about 70 cents for every dollar a man earns doing the same work.

134 This secret makes me want to smash something. Does everything have to be a fucking college course? Can't I just enjoy something for what it is without analyzing it to death? It's not like my sole purpose as a fan is to show off how much knowledge I have or how well-versed I am in a particular subject. Fuck.

152 Rorschach is probably one of my least favorite characters. He's so unlikeable. I will admit that he looks cooler than most of the other characters, though.

153 I think it's pretty obvious that there'll be a Lee x Kara end (if Kara ends up with anyone). However, I almost cried when Anders got shot because I could totally relate to Kara in that scene. All I could think about was the few times when my husband was having a serious asthma attack and I couldn't really do anything to help. I guess I can just relate to that feeling of helplessness when something life-threatening happens to a loved one.

What if I find it fun to analyze something? What if I find discussion and theory fun? I write stupid, almost-stream-of-consiousness, texts on philosophy on my free time and I don't do it because I'm confused, I do it because I find it fun! Besides, my secret was never against "enjoying something for what it is" but rather against "analyzing something for what it is".

Whatever floats your boat. My point is that your secret comes off as elitist, like I'm somehow less of a "real fan" or even ignorant for not analyzing every series I happen to be a fan of.

Except that it's entirely possible to enjoy something on multiple levels. In my experience, at least, "enjoying something for what it is" doesn't get me very far most of the time. Sometimes it's fun to analyze what at first looks to be unanalyzable (is that a word?), find things that you later find out don't make sense, etc. And I for one thought the OP's ideas sounded intriguing.

Besides, let's face it, fandom can be quite mind-numbing sometimes. A little intellectualism wouldn't hurt.

Maybe I misunderstood the OP but s/he seemed to be talking down to fandom in general for not trying to draw deeper meaning from media. Occasionally I'll try to draw deeper meaning from a series I'm watching, but I don't feel compelled to do that every time I watch/read most things.

I didn't get that impression; I could see if someone thought she thought every fan had to be that way, but I didn't see any condescension (then again, I'll admit I'm rather oblivious to things like that). And I agree that no one should feel compelled to draw deeper meanings, but I for one would like to see it a hell of a lot more often.
