Thank you. I think that your reasoning is pretty sound too, as fandom feminists, or LJ feminists, or even armchair feminists are just plain frustrating at times - since no, not EVERYTHING is about their cause, and sometimes, yes. A man will be a pig. Just look at House if you want examples.

I have no objection to wanting equal rights for the sexes, I just feel that injecting that into fandom is really pushing it too far, as fandom is really just escapism and not the 'real world.'

Fandom traditionalists are also plain frustrating at times (and worse considering their real life behavior). Sometimes yes, a man will be a pig--I don't think feminists disagree, and sometimes a man will be pretty cool, same thing with women. Our genders don't define who we are, that's the point.

Fandom usually covers media topics and it's pretty important that the media is looked at critically, rather than just swallowing those messages whole. For me, looking critically at these gender double standards in television and movies is pretty refreshing and is just as much "escapism" for me as some 14 year olds' slash crossover fanfic is for her.

Fuck yes. Epic amounts of word to this; thank you for saying it.

Are you one of those "if it has bad messages, it should be banned" types? People aren't going to imitate everything they see on TV. Not even kids, if you do your job right.

No, not at all? I didn't even realize it was a "type", there are some obscenity bans where I live, but no banning of "bad messages".

You can look critically at something, and even discuss these messages critically without banning them. Since the OP mentioned fandom feminists, for example, these are people within the fandom who look at their own favorite shows and look about what these shows are saying about gender/sexuality, and then discussing/criticizing them. If they wanted these shows banned, they probably wouldn't be in the fandom, haha.

Truth. He doesn't even have to say anything to offend anyone, somewhere.

and sometimes, yes. A man will be a pig

And some people prefer not to excuse piggish behavior, because some people want to live in a world where being a shithead is more negative than being a minority.

Soo... feminism doesn't have any place in popular culture and fiction?

I understand writing characters realistically is important, and not every character is going to be a great crusader for women's rights. But that doesn't mean women can't examine the books, movies, television, and comics they enjoy on a deeper level and try to understand the role of women in that part of culture. Afterall, in many cases what happens in media is a reflection of trends in real life.

So, I would argue that feminism does have a place in fandom and everywhere.

But equal rights isn't just something that applies to the real world. Even if pay becomes equal, if employment becomes truly gender-blind, nobody's way of thinking is going to change if there is any cultural area at all where the attitude is, "feminism doesn't matter here because this isn't meant to be serious." Changing people's basic attitudes is vital in order to make sure equality goes any further than skin deep, and the way people think when they're relaxing and having fun is often the closest you can get to what they really think deep down.

That's why fandom is actually a pretty important place for feminism, I'd argue, because you can see what people say when they're not watching their mouths, and if you point it out, then hopefully you can get them to reexamine and work on their own biases.
