Well, I think slash does have to do with LGBT issues, especially when it's being forbidden. To create a space that is devoid of any mention of gay relationships is, to me, essentially homophobic. I don't know what you think slash is, exactly, but for many people I know it is synonymous with gay romance (like the het romance genre that we just call romance, only with same-sex pairings).

I didn't mean to come over quite so curmudgeonly. I'm a gay woman who's done the rounds in civil rights marches and patching up bloodied faces. I can't help but be very very suspicious when a group who are in the gleeful majority and whose carnival is unlikely to cost them anything appropriate the LGBTQI fight to bolster their underdog identity.

I wasn't being completely fair in this case, because as you point out there's a definite nastiness in segregating fictions and keeping gay themes out.

But I must confess there have been times in fandom when I've found myself empathising with the het shippers in spaces where Yaoi is very much dominant lens. Because it's the marginalisation that's the thing, not the gender.

So actually, yes, I think slash does have something to do with LGBTQI issues. I just think it's wildly erroneous to think it breaks down as an easy allignment of slash=gay, het=straight.

If you could elaborate on that, I'd be absolutely grateful. I know that some people put the subversive, non-canon element on slash, but that's not really how the word is used these days.
