I love how people give the characters redeeming factors. They're all horrible people.
Eh? The redeeming factors are there in the comic. I'd argue Dan and Laurie aren't horrible people, first off--see the burning building rescue. As for Rorschach (and Ozymandias), the great thing about the comic is that it's not at all black and white. They do horrible things, but there are absolutely sympathetic aspects to them; they're both trying to save the world in their own way. That doesn't excuse them, and it doesn't mean they don't have ulterior motives, but that doesn't mean it's out-of-character to explore it. Hell, even the Comedian can be occasionally sympathetic in his attempts to reach out to Laurie, and there's no arguing he's not a terrible person.

Does the fandom go too far in making them sympathetic? Yeah (myself included), but it's just as silly to treat them as totally evil people as it is to treat them as totally good people.

I guess it's just Alan Moore's writing style that makes me think he's personally trying to make characters extremists. And he does. Even in V for Vendetta he did the same thing. He wants you to think about it, but I still think he wants you to see the flaws. These heroes we worship, the Superman's and Batman's they aren't all that great. True, you're right. Dan wasn't a bad guy but that seemed to be what he was trying to showcase as his problem. Laurie was mostly alright. She had some anger issues. Again, with due reason.

Rorschach's past was definitely a factor in the way he reacted to things and the way he thought. No doubt. What he saw his mother doing and how she treated him and the bullies he had to stand up against. He can't be held accountable for his past. But at the same time, he's an anti-hero. He feels that people need to suffer like him. I almost think there was a time when I sympathized with him. When I said, "Maybe he's right. Look at all the other villains. They all live and wreak havoc and nobody stops him." But I guess it was at this point that I realized my mind was being messed with. Any murderer can justify their actions. That's the problem. Death isn't right any way we look at it.
