# 129

You know, I kind of agree with this. I think that oftentimes people forget that feminism is based in the idea of choice for women. And choice means just that: CHOICE. To me, it means that a woman chooses her path, whether that includes being a mother or a professional or both. It seems that I so often read "feminst" comments that degrade a fic or canon source for featuring a woman who is married (i.e. Molly Weasley in HP), has children, and possibly stays at home to care for her children. There is nothing wrong with mothering one's children. Conversely, there is nothing wrong with being a working mother. I object to the idea that a female character must be, essentially, stereotypically masculine in order to have value.

OP, dunno if this was your point or not. But it struck a chord with me. I'm not sure if all "fandom feminists" really understand the meaning of feminism or the origins of the movement.

While I agree that there is nothing wrong with mothering and being a stay at home mother (something a lot of feminist literature praises), I will say this about choice: if we are socialized to think only one, or few, avenues are appropriate for we women, then we really don't have much of a choice. In order to be a true choice, a woman needs other, viable--socially acceptable--options. Of course in a lot of Western cultures, there is a lot of diversity in what is acceptable for women. However, there are pockets in our societies that have very traditional and limiting expectations and roles for women.

All very good points. I agree.

I think, though, that in fandom in particular, choosing to be a stay at home mother is seen as "less than." I don't agree with that POV.

I agree. Because, then, these feminists are limiting women in the same manner that traditionally patriarchy did (does).

What baffles me is, in what fandoms in particular, these occur. I've only encountered intelligent, understanding discussions of feminism in fandom.

Yes. There is extreme value in thoughtful parenting.

Well, I can speak for the Harry Potter fandom. Usually someone pops off with a comment about how it sucks that [insert female character] has gotten married and had children. The ensuing discussion is often quite good, though. But there are a fair number of fans who find the female characters in HP to be boring or marginalized, just because they may exhibit some stereotypical gender roles or characteristics.
