105. I think you're supposed to.

112. Interesting. I struggle with that actually when posting some sort of fan contribution that gets comments. Sometimes I find folks who reply to every comment they get as just trying to spike their comment count and encourage people to fawn over them. So I end up not replying unless there's something specific to reply to instead of just "thanks". Because I don't want to be needy. I feel like if I reply to everything it makes me seem full of myself all "thank you, thank you, my loving public." Heh. It's weird how perception can be so different.

Are you fucking kidding? People only respond to their comments to up their comment count?? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Some people like to talk to other people and be POLITE about receiving a gift, which is exactly what feedback is. If someone gives you a gift, you're supposed to say thanks. It has nothing to do with being needy or wanting to up the comment count. Jesus Christ.

[identity profile] jkpolk.livejournal.com 2009-03-05 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Overreact much? I was saying sometimes people are like that, not always. I'm explaining why I'm a bit neurotic about the thanks stuff because of perceptions. Some folks seem genuinely grateful. Some people seem to bask in the attention. And I am a neurotic person by nature and fear how I would come across. I tend to fall on the side of answering when it's specific. I'm not saying it's RIGHT, I am noting how odd it is how different people can view the same thing completely different based on their personal baggage. Maybe I didn't express it as well as I'd hoped but I think your reaction was a bit overly vitriolic.

"If someone gives you a gift, you're supposed to say thanks."

The artist or writer gave the fandom the gift of fanart or fanfic. The commenters say thanks for the gift in the form of comments. There, gift given, thank you recieved.

Are artists and writers supposed to then thank you every thank you? Do the commenters then have to thank you the thank yous' thank yous? WHERE DOES THE MADNESS END?

Re: 112

(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I COULD NOT AGREE WITH YOU MORE!

Re: 112

(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Any writer or artist who thinks of their work as a "gift" to fandom has a fucking ego the size of Alaska. You're supposed to create for you want to, not because you're a feedback whore. Not to mention I can't tell you how many pieces of shit I've read or looked at where the writer or artist didn't respond to their feedback and there's no way in hell that shit could possibly be considered a "gift." Get the fuck over yourself.

Are artists and writers supposed to then thank you every thank you? Do the commenters then have to thank you the thank yous' thank yous? WHERE DOES THE MADNESS END?

Please provide a link where this cycle continued past someone leaving a comment and the writer/artist leaving a "thanks." I refuse to believe this epidemic of circular feedback that people keep talking actually seriously exists. Where are the thank yous for thank yous for thank yous? If they don't actually exist, this argument is BULLSHIT.

Re: 112

Why don't you sit down and take a deep breath, and let the people, you know, do what they do.

Re: 112

(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Any commenter who thinks of their feedback as a "gift" to fandom has a fucking ego the size of Alaska. You're supposed to reply because you appreciated the fic, not because you're a feedback whore.

Re: 112

(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
The point is someone has done something nice for you -- i.e., commented on your fic to let you know they liked it -- and you should respond to that niceness with a polite thank you in return. You have not done something nice for fandom by blessing it with your fic/art. You have done something FOR YOURSELF by posting it so others can respond to it. I don't understand why that basic difference is so hard to understand.

Re: 112

(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
Did fanfic writers run over your dog or something?

Your attitude seems to be that writing and posting a fanfic has no worth to anyone because it probably sucks anyway and nobody but the writer benefits. But every comment to it, no matter what, is a special and precious gift to the community. Never mind that people generally read fanfics because they enjoy it, and that if you didn't it's dishonest to tell the writer you did; never mind the comparative amounts of work that go into each; never mind that replying to a fic with concrit can serve a constructive purpose, which is vastly different from a two-word response. If you've written and posted a fanfic, you've already screwed yourself over, apparently, and you should be grateful anyone else deigns to give you the time of day.

How is putting time and effort into something I think other people who share similar interests will enjoy doing something for myself? I post things so other people can ENJOY them (heck, sometime I post things ANONYMOUSLY, so there's ZERO direct benefit to me there), NOT so I can get delicious, presious comments. I don't understand why the idea that some people don't obsess over who commented or replied to who is so hard for you to grasp.

Re: 112

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2009-03-06 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Authors post to share with fandom AND to receive feedback. Notice I said feedback, not praise. This has nothing to do with "obsessing over comments." Don't tell me when you post things for others to enjoy that you don't like receiving feedback to let you know if they DID like it, because that's bullshit. If you have no idea whether or not people liked it, or don't care, you ARE posting for yourself. "Zero benefit from anon posting," is complete crap. Just because no one knows it's you doesn't mean you don't receive the benefits of any feedback you read.

Readers enjoy (or, er, not) and reply - generally to at least thank the author for putting in the effort. Authors reply to thank readers for putting in the effort to comment. And that is where it ends.

Pretty basic back-and-forth.

The entitlement/assumptions of entitlement in this thread are amazing. Nobody is "owed" comments, but the back-and-forth is the currency that keeps the whole damn machine running.

Re: 112

(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
And seriously, if the fic's that bad?

DON'T COMMENT PRAISING IT IN THE FIRST PLACE. Problem solved.

Re: 112

(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
God, exactly. I can't believe I'm still sitting here talking to this bozo, when their argument lacks an ounce of sense. If you bother commenting on something, then it's probably okay to assume you liked it, and appreciated it. The author doesn't think their fic is a "gift" to you, YOU do.

But sincerely OP, you know what you can do to get people to reply to your feedback? Use the exact tone you've been using here to comment on their stuff. Exactly like this. The response will be like you won't believe.

Re: 112

(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Also, please do continue to think I'm the secret's OP. That won't make you look at all stupid. It may just be possible more than one person holds the same opinion.

Re: 112

(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no, that was before I realized you're just overbrimming with this selfless desire to take up the ridiculous causes of random strangers. How silly of me. Please, go on with your bad self.

Re: 112

(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Way to assume I actually did leave a comment on a piece of shit fic/art. Ever consider it's just possible I saw a bunch of other assholes fawning over it? Moron.

Re: 112

(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Then it's those assholes' problem, now isn't it?

==============================

There's an artist in one of my fandoms who just draws for arse-pats from fans. Just favouriting her art on DA isn't enough, its all over her page that she considers it rude to favourite without leaving a comment.

She's only famous because she draws shitty Mary-Sue art that most people in fandom LOL over, she's even got a page to herself on ED

Re: 112

[identity profile] pyrasaur.livejournal.com 2009-03-06 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
It's great when people get bitchy over this type of stuff. I always thought the point of common courtesy was to create good karma, but apparently not!

Re: 105 112

(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I find folks who reply to every comment they get as just trying to spike their comment count and encourage people to fawn over them.

Oh, god, this comment has just made me feel so utterly humiliated. I respond to every single comment I get - and always have - because I think it's good manners and common courtesy, and now I'm literally facepalming knowing that there are people who think I only do that to spike my comment count. :(

Re: 105 112

[identity profile] jkpolk.livejournal.com 2009-03-06 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Please don't feel that way on my account. Take my neurotic perceptions with a grain of salt. :) I just worry way too much. And I have known a few people who are way too invested in comment counts. But you're probably much more in the right to be polite. When I started with "interesting.." I really meant that. It's nice to know people actually WANT replies to every comment. I was honestly never sure whether it was the nice thing to do or if it seemed overly attention-basking. And I don't dip my feet into the fan arty world often enough to get a full enough idea of the "norm".

Re: 105 112

(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Me too, anon. I never even thought about it. It just seemed the polite thing to do. And apparently that makes me look like an attention whore? Now I feel paranoid.
