(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 11:25 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, some people are going to have hobbies you think are stupid, and no, it doesn't make sense to buy a ton of dolls when you can't pay your bills. But if people can afford them and don't go overboard with it, what exactly is wrong with liking ball-jointed dolls? It's not my thing-- sure, I'd like one if it was cheap, but it's not-- but how is it a worse hobby than gaming or buying lots of anime or figure-collecting? As some of the other commenters said, people use the dolls to learn how to sew, and for figure-drawing. (Full disclosure: I'm a fan of relatively expensive clothing.)
It might not be all that constructive, but why not let people have their fun? I'm sure you've got a hobby that other people would criticize-- so does everyone. If we're at fandom secrets, we're all nerds here. Come on, step away from the people playing with dolls, and instead of mocking them for doing what they like to do, go enjoy something that you like to do. :3

In general reply to the secret: I agree there's a lot of shittery in the fandom. From the outside the 90% Japanese/elven names and 96% of male dolls being gay and particpating in charmingly awkward yaoi photo stories (trufax figures, obv) can look pretty rubbish but there's a great deal of creativity too, it just never gets the focus. I've seen some genuinely beautiful photographs (no, really, and I'm not talking about hiritai or whatever, some of the lesser known artists who only post their images on DoA do phenomenal work) and you can always appreciate when someone's actually put thought into their doll's appearance, colour scheme, etc.
And, yes, there's certainly elitism, but definitely not from everyone and it's not a constant presence in the way it's portrayed to be. It's not like (and here's where I do the arsehole part and snark on another fandom) lolitas where decent outfits are bitched about just because they're not BURANDO.
Personally, I generally find the BJD fandom quite accepting. There is plenty of snark about the awful stuff and sometimes it does cross the line into uncalled-for malice, but can you name a fandom where that doesn't happen (with fanfic, fanart etc)? And, of course, like other fandoms there are some pretty... weird people. I admit there might be a slightly higher concentration in the BJD fandom.
I think maybe it's one of those things you either get or don't? As plenty of other people have pointed out, there's many uses for a doll, I won't bother going into all that crap, it's already been posted approx 148 times. In line with the either getting it or not, I can't see why people don't grasp the concept of meets and how fun they are. You go to a nice place, meet some people into the same hobby, have a laugh, have the opportunity to take some photos of some other dolls, go home and share the photos. Obviously, it can be awkward if you get some of those well-publicised freaks.
Also, $700 isn't generally considered an affordable doll. $100-$300, more like. $700 is more than I spent on either of my dolls and they're in the average price range.
Tl;dr: BJD fandom needs better PR. In a far more concise way than I can manage. It's just a hobby, too much focus is put on the crazies.
