I completely agree, OP, and I haven't seen one single excuse in the comments here that's a good, solid, legitimate reason to not respond to feedback.
-You feel silly saying 'thank you' over and over? Expressing your thanks is never silly, and you're only saying it once to each person.
-You get so much feedback that you couldn't possibly answer it all, and you don't write/make fanart for feedback anyway? Perhaps you should disable comments.
-You think that you've given fandom a 'gift' with your writing/artwork and they should be thanking you? I assure you - you're not nearly as awesome as you think you are.

No, not at all; I'm paying them a compliment. If a co-worker at the office comes in wearing a new dress and says, "Look at my dress; I made it," I'm not obligated to say anything, but I like it, so I do...I say, "It's beautiful. Good job!" My co-worker doesn't have to say something in return. She could just turn around and walk off. But if she's the type that uses good manners, she'll say, "Thanks."

Comments don't exist in a vaccum. Looking down a list of comments and seeing them all rubber stamped with a thanks speaks worse of the artist or writer to me than someone who only replies to some of the comments.

You think that you've given fandom a 'gift' with your writing/artwork and they should be thanking you? I assure you - you're not nearly as awesome as you think you are.

The only person I saw claiming artwork/writing was a "gift" was from someone mocking a poster who claimed comments are a "gift" and the artists or writers "owe" the commenters.

I agree. If I really want a reply from the author, I'll give them something they would want to reply to. If I just write the standard "Nice story. Thanks for sharing," that's implicit permission for them not to say anything back. Whenever I see someone obviously giving the same reply over and over, well, I know they're just trying to be polite, but it still seems kind of cheap. Might as well not have bothered at all.

I suppose it depends on how a person has been brought up, cultural differences, etc. The way I was raised, and where I was raised, it would be considered shockingly bad form to thank only some of the people, especially in a public setting where others can see that while they weren't thanked, some people were.

Do you often go back to look at comments you've made on some story on the Internet?

Re: 112

(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
Me personally? No. But as the person I was replying to said, "Looking down a list of comments," I assume she/he does. Or more likely, there were already a good many comments posted when that person got there, and they could already see that some people were thanked, others were ignored.

-what about all the people who bitch and whine when you reply to everything?
Seriously?

I'll just copy paste my response:
12. But people get pissed at me when I just say 'thanks' or 'thank you for the comment' to all my comments.
They complain about how it's obviously not meant because I'd say it to everyone despite the fact there was nothing to reply to other than a 'nice' or 'cute' or similarly short reviews. So I gave up.
So now I say thanks and take time responding to those who take the time to offer crit or say more than just one word.

I can't please the other group no matter what I do, so OP go ahead, I doubt I'm missing much by not receiving your review.

What the hell kind of middle ground is there dude?
People whine when you reply to all of them, people whine when you don't, what do you suggest?

This is a good question. A damn good question. I swear, after reading all the comments on this secret, I think the only way to please everyone would be to just disable comments altogether. No, then someone would say you weren't being open to constructive criticism. It's official. You can't win with fandom.

I feel the need to quote Yahtzee.
"Fans are clingy, complaining dipshits who will never, ever be grateful for any concession you make. The moment you shut out their shrill, tremulous voices, the happier you'll be for it."

Sure it was directed at games companies, but I figure it's applicable enough
