Well, according to wikipedia Alyson Hannigan's mother is Jewish so... yes, technically she's Jewish.

No, she is Jewish. There is no technically about it, Jewish identity is matrilinear.

Yes, I know that. I just meant that as far as I know she's not practising Judaism. Though I could be wrong about that, since I know pretty much nothing about her personal life.

I know that Jewish identity is matrilinear from a religious point of view, but is that the only definition of Jewishness that it's ever appropriate to use?

You can use other ones as well as, but not instead of. It can be added to, but not deleted.
