I've shared this story before, but a few years ago I was looking up one of my favorite authors to see if she'd published anything new (this is something I do regularly) and found out that she'd passed away and I didn't realize it. I made a secret about how that made me feel sad, both because she died and because I hadn't even noticed. A named user who is no longer active AFAIK told me that people died every day and IIRC implied that I was making too big a deal out of it for someone I didn't know personally. The word "parasocial" wasn't as common at the time, but that was the gist of the accusation.

Mind you, it's not like I was sobbing into my breakfast cereal or holding my own mock funeral. I just mentioned that it was a shock and a sad surprise, and someone took offense at that enough to go after me for having those emotions about a famous author.

I’m pretty sure I know exactly which named user you’re talking about. And I’m glad they’re no longer active, because they were the worst. Sorry you had to deal with their bullshit just for feeling sad that an author you liked passed away. :/ Feeling that way is completely normal.
