(Anonymous) 2021-11-02 06:04 am (UTC)(link)I have to be a bit more careful about reading articles or watching videos of celebs, but when I choose well, those are pretty reliable mood boosters too.
Parasocial relationships, is that what the kids are calling celebrity crushes these days?

(Anonymous) 2021-11-02 07:50 am (UTC)(link)Pretty much, yeah. It sounds like a strawman but some people will genuinely scream "parasocial" at anyone who dares to have positive feelings about a celebrity and I've even once seen it used to describe people getting invested in fiction. It's like "gaslighting": people started using the word because they think it makes them sound clever but they've used it so incorrectly so often that it's now lost all meaning.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-02 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)People can take an attraction or affection for a celebrity too far and feel like they know them, or are entitled to their time and attention. And of course, the worst case scenario is stalker fans.
However, the way some people accuse the most basic interest in a famous person of being in a parasocial relationships is where the trouble comes from the puritanical busybodies OP is talking about. It’s really annoying to deal with these people.
