I'm in the same place. I've worked hard on this one fic and I still think it has interesting ideas, but the closer I get to the end the less I think people are going to read it (especially because it's novel length).

It has definitely become my pet project and I fear I'll be devastated by lack of attention for it. Enough so that I don't even want to post mine anymore, I just want to finish it. I'll put it on my website at least, but I don't think I'll post it to AO3. Maybe eventually when I develop a new pet project and feel less attached to this one. The important thing right now is finishing it for myself so I can work on new stuff.

Mood. A year and a half ago I wrote a fic for the first time in years (well, I'd written a couple of little ficlets right before then, but this was the first full fic). At first I thought it was really good, but over time I got more and more critical of it, until eventually I just hated it so much I couldn't bear to even post it. It's still chilling on my hard drive, 95% finished and utterly neglected. :/

I had a similar thought process when I wrote a long fic for my current fandom. I ended up posting it when it was done and got some nice comments on it, which really surprised me because I was sure nobody would enjoy it, so you never know, OP.

Unfortunately, OP, that's just how creation is. We all go through periods of confidence and not, even those of us who are published. (I self-pubbed a book 2 weeks ago.)

Nothing is wrong, and good for you for wanting to stick with it and complete your writing.

It's normal, most writer hit that point eventually. You have to keep going until you find the second wind. If you do Nanowrimo, the third week in the forums is all about this feeling.

Amusingly, this secret just unexpectedly gave me some needed motivation.

See, I am in the middle of writing a lengthy thing that I have wanted to write for about 15 years. But it's in a tiny fandom and no one cares about this part of the lore, so I am under the assumption that no matter how much I pour into this story, MAYBE a couple of my friends (most likely the one who's not in the fandom but reads my stuff for it anyway because she likes my writing) will read it, and that's it. No one will care.

But anyway. Just now I was page-downing on my reading list to get to where I read to yesterday, and stopped on this post. What was visible on the top of the screen was the last line of this secret:

"finish it, even if nobody cares."

...Yes, yes, I think I will. That is good advice. =)

Steam annoys me because it updated too much and I had to stop it from launching at startup, but it hardly makes me log in. I avoided using it for a long time because of those reasons though.

Recently Origin is making me log in every single time just because I want to play my games offline. It's super annoying so I get how you feel about Steam doing that to you.

I do miss the simplicity of when genderswap fics were more character studies than gender studies. No issue with the recent influx of trans- or nonbinary-headcanon fics or whatever, I just really miss when you could write a genderswap or Rule63, or even a good old-fashioned body-swap, without it being Issuefic about Gender Identity.
