133 - Oh, agreed times about a zillion and then some.

146 - I get my dark and gritty from Batman. I've yet to read Watchmen, but the hype so far is turning me right off it.

163 - This made me laugh because that is so totally not Dick in your picture. And if it is, somehow he's wearing Tim's costume, what madness is this. EITHER WAY I'M LOLLIN' and this comment is unrelated to the secret itself.

A friend of mine showed me the comic in Borders the other day.

It's really pastel colored and the art is as unremarkable and generic as comic art gets.

Pretty much... not in any way different from 90% of all the other superhero comics ever made.

Ugh, that ART, what IS that?
I have a hard enough time tripping through art for series I'm invested in. WHY DO I NEED TWELVE ISSUES OF ART LIKE THAT.

I have it on my harddrive, but I haven't bothered reading it yet. I'm not very inclined to do so now, either.

The ugly-as-fuck aspect actually surprised me. For all the hype it gets, I'd have at least thought it would be aesthetically pleasing, but nooooo.... every page is like that or worse. It might be tolerable if you were colorblind, but otherwise, just looking at the pages makes me want to get out my art markers and correct the color scheme. It's horrid.

Seriously, I had NO IDEA it looked like that. AND THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A WORK OF GENIUS?

Ha. HAHAHA.
I needed the laugh, thanks! :D

Genius? *SNRK* Right. I suspect it's just another recycled, unoriginal fiction meme attracting a bunch of tools, like most big fandoms these days.

That sounds like most big fandoms, doesn't it?
I'm even in some huge fandoms; there are great people in them. There are also tons of people I would never associate with if they weren't crawling all over communities in an unavoidable manner. D:

Whoa way to miss the point and not clue in to 1) the art is from the 90s and is pretty damn good considering what a lot of the DC and Marvel books looked like and 2) Watchmen was a deconstruction of the superhero genre and was meant to be a indictment against 'dark and gritty'.

You can not like it because of the hype or because it isn't your thing, but don't bash it because you don't know what it is.

Re: 133, 146, 163

[identity profile] jikeidannin.livejournal.com 2009-03-06 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I really don't know if it's "dark and gritty" or not; see: haven't read it yet.

I happen to hate most art from that time period as it is. In fact, a lot of comic book art is kind of ugly to me. I read Batman and some other things because I love the characters and have for years.

I stand by my view that I don't need twelve more issues of something with art that I don't like when I am not already invested in the characters. I'm allowed to not like the art, REGARDLESS of when it was drawn.

2) Watchmen was a deconstruction of the superhero genre

True.

and was meant to be a indictment against 'dark and gritty'.

Um...no? Not at all? Watchmen was groundbreaking because it was the first well-known superhero comic to be dark and gritty. In 1986 most comics were of really nice guys in tights running around fighting really evil guys in tights. Watchman (and Dark Knight Returns, which came out about the same time) made Death in the Family, Killing Joke, and other dark and morally gray stories possible, it wasn't an indictment of them...

It's possible to read it that way in light of where superhero comics went after that, but I'm pretty sure that's not how it was meant...

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. That's really a very superficial look. Basically all you are judging the book on is the color scheme on a page? Without any understanding of the meaning behind the moment. That was one of the most chilling, sad moments in the book, because he's letting go of the last thing keeping him human, and he's seeing it as inevitable that he's lost the ability to put value on things. Morality is now meaningless to him.

Re: 133, 146, 163

[identity profile] evil-girraffe.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
So don't read it and STFU. Don't try to criticise something by flipping through a couple of pages and writing it off.

How can people complain about they 'hype' of Watchmen when it's 1) so much less hyped than say, Twilight, or Wicked, or frakking Dark Knight, and 2) more then a legitimate piece of work? Okay, I understand getting tired of hearing about something. But until the movie hooplah began (and even THAT was pretty quiet up until a year ago), Watchmen hasn't been 'hyped' outside of the industry; it's remained a well respected piece of work for over two decades. I feel like people are just hating on it now because it's cool to do so (many the same people who dressed up as Ledger's joker for halloween this year).

Re: 133, 146, 163

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
I still wouldn't know what it was -- and less would I CARE -- if a friend of mine hadn't cornered me with it and spent an hour describing it to me in painful detail.

Re: 133, 146, 163

[identity profile] basiatione.livejournal.com 2009-03-06 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's Dick. Tim in the Dini/Timmverse wears something much closer to current comics!Tim's costume. :)

Also: the art in Watchmen might not be pretty (I don't think it is, personally), but it's meticulously detailed and actually enhances the content of the story through stuff like visual motifs and I guess what you'd call significant blocking, which is why a lot of folks sing its praises. The art plays a much more active role in the storytelling and theme-building than is typical of most comics even though it isn't drawn/colored in a way that's currently in vogue. So, yeah, not exactly pretty, but it has its virtues.

Still, if you're looking for something shiny and fun (and there's nothing wrong with that!) then no, it probably isn't for you.

It's from The Batman & Robin Adventures #8 and definitely is Dick!
