Wordy McWordsauce.

The 1971 Wonka movie is full of subtle humor and background details only apparent on subsequent viewings. Its psychedelic charm may be dated, but it somehow evokes a timeless sort of dream world. Wilder's sarcastic, intelligent Wonka is off the rocker in some bizarre and brilliant way, giving the impression that the inside of his brain runs much like the factory itself. He's very much with it, even if you might not like where he's going.

I've enjoyed other Burton/Depp collaborations, and I hoped that the 2005 Wonka movie would have Beetlejuice-ish charm. Aside from a very few bright spots, like Charlie's earnest dad and Augustus' actually being detestable this time around, it was a major letdown. Entire scenes hang on lines and gags that are mildly amusing at best. Instead of sly, under the radar humor worked into dialog, we get tired double entendre references to nuts and grass. Depp's Wonka is ditzy, rude, stupid, and irritating, from his dialog right down to his vocal mannerisms. ("'Kay?") I didn't like him or relate to him. He didn't seem capable of managing a lemonade stand, let alone an enormous chocolate factory. I couldn't even find him funny, which might have redeemed him a bit.

Wilder's Wonka is still one of my favorite acted characters to date.

Yes, that's it exactly with the remake. It was more faithful to the book in a lot of ways, but I found it fell flat compared to the 1971 version with a few exceptions - the special effects were done really well (which, yeah - 34 years and a huge budget makes a difference), Freddie Highmore was lovely as Charlie, and Deep Roy was a scream as the Oompa Loompas. And Danny Elfman's music was fantastic. I mean, I missed the "Oompa Loompa, doopity doo" bits, and they'll always be classic and awesome, but I really like Elfman's music.
