While Watchmen is considered by a large amount of people to be the greatest graphic novel of all time,

WHY?

(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Why don't you fucking read it, then maybe you'll have an idea. Even if you don't end up liking it, knowing what it's about will give you some insight into why other people love it.

[identity profile] ormery.livejournal.com 2009-03-06 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, what is so hard for people to grasp about the idea that some people

1) have read Watchmen
2) do not like Watchmen
3) do not think it is particularly amazing from an objective standpoint

SERIOUSLY IT'S NOT THAT HARD

(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand that people like that exist. [personal profile] gethenian is not one of those people. S/he has never read Watchmen and is basing his/her opinion on a description from a friend and flipping through the gn at a bookstore. My point is that if you're going to constantly a book, you probably should read it first.

[identity profile] ormery.livejournal.com 2009-03-06 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, I see. I will bear this in mind next time I want to constantly a book.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Dammit, I deleted the wrong word in my final edit. Replace "constantly" with "criticize."

Hopefully I won't make any stupid mistakes in this comment.

I assumed s/he had already read it.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
In other threads, [personal profile] gethenian has said that s/he has never read, and never intends to read, Watchmen. His/her knowledge comes from a friend's description and paging through the graphic novel at a bookstore.

So that makes my asking for other people's reasoning totally not worthy of an answer.

OK.

Maybe if you'd bother to name a few reasons why it's TEH BESTEST THING EVAR, people like me would feel more compelled to look into it, rather than writing it off as some piece of regurgitated edgy crap that attracts a bunch of assholes who flip their shit over anyone questioning their worship of it.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-06 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I can't tell you why it's TEH BEST THING EVAR. I love Watchmen, but it does have a lot of major flaws and it is definitely a product of its time (I was born the same year it was released, so it was hard for me to relate the Cold War paranoia). If you don't like it, or don't have any interest in reading it, that's fine. I'm just getting tired of you dismissing it when you don't actually know what it's about.

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2009-03-06 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I do know what it's about. Not having read it doesn't mean I don't know anything about it.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-07 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
True. I'll rephrase: if you have never read something, you can't be shocked to hear that other people really love it. You may know something about Watchmen, but you don't know enough to say that nobody could like it, or that it's just "regurgitated edgy crap."

Is that better?

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Because it has a lot of serious themes and thought provoking philosophies about the nature of good, evil, and humanity that are mirrored in both the overt story and more subtly in the imagery in a creative way I have never seen before or since.

Because there are no easy answers, only more questions.

Because the story isn't just a straight forward go from point A to point B, but a non-linear telling that gradually builds up the background until everyone's motivations are revealed.

It's literature.
