108, 133

108: Wow. That's really odd and a little disturbing, I have to say.

133: I have my favourite version that I consider canon above all other versions, but otherwise: I agree so very, very hard. I just don't understand how anyone could possibly defend the film as being up to par with any of the musical recordings.

Heck, the slasher movie > the ALW movie.

Ha! I love the Robert Englund version (in that what his name is, I forget?). He's actually kind of cute in that one in a strange sort of way. Also, after originally watching that, I had that song stuck in my head for weeks! But yes, much better.

Yeah, that's his name. I found him surprisingly endearing, too, for such a reduced portrayal; Freddie Kruger is a surprisingly good actor! I love the music, too, I wrote it out from the score in the film so I could learn it. :P

It is funny that a film trying to turn the story into a slasher movie managed to be more accurate than a "serious" adaptation.

Yes, it is amusing.

And is the "destler" in your sn from that movie?

It is indeed, well-spotted. ;)

I ADORE the RE version.

Myself, I hold Kay's version my own "personal" canon, as much as I have one; mostly it's just a mixing of all the versions I've encountered and then my own thoughts on the matter.

I actually wanted to like the musical. I own it and on occasion "give it another chance" like it's a food I didn't like as a child but might now. However, it's always as bad as I remember. Vocal talent aside, I didn't even sympathize with the acting. I think GB acted his heart out...but he didn't reach me. I adore PW but I think he really phoned-in this one. And Emmy...

Would it be skeevy if I friended you? I've been on lj for years and I have the hardest time finding non-ALW!movie phans with whom to chat. :(

Not at all! :) There's also a Kay-centric community if you're interested, but it hasn't been too active lately.

Kay is my canon as well, everything else is extra for me. I went to see the movie with some feelings of impending doom, but I was willing to give it a chance. Never again. The terrible singing is actually less offensive to me than the butchering of the story (and honestly, Raoul beating Erik in a fight very nearly had me rioting) and the fact that- singing aside- the casting still makes no sense. I don't understand why they weren't even true to the musical never mind the book.

It's nice I'm not alone of the RE!Phantom love. I'm still surprised at how much I like it, but it has more of the spirit about it than a lot of the adaptations in spite of its liberties.

:) I actually think I might be a part of that Kay comm...

I like the stage musical very much; it was my first encounter with the story--ever--so I will always be grateful for that. I remember, right after I saw it, reading the entire Leroux novel online because I was too impatient for my parents to take me to the library/bookstore.

I remember watching the movie and thinking: okay, if Raoul is a better singer, more attractive, a better fighter, masculine (I find him more boy-next-door/non-sexually threatening in GL and original ALW stage), what is the appeal in movie!Phantom? They completely emasculated him--what does he have to offer than Raoul can't do better?

The fighting thing PISSED ME OFF SO HARD in the theatre! I guess it makes sense in that version, since he apparently has been living in the Opera House since he was twelve and never made it to Persia. :/

Which Kay community? I wanna join! I wanna join!

I first became aware of PotO through the Crawford/Brightman version of ALW's and through the Yeston version. However, the first one I saw/read/got my hands on was the original book version. Having read that and Kay's version, Kay's version just make the most sense out of all the phanfics available! Definitely way better than this movie. Seriously, in response to the movie, since when is Erik a whiny emo kid? And since when doesn't he have his awesome genius and abilities? Since when does he have to poison Carlotta to get her to do that "croak"? Also, I love the scene in the book where the managers are trying to figure out what happened to their money, and Kay's explanation, which rocked. So please, where is the community/what is it called?

Yeah, whoa, sorry for the late reply--I was out of town last week.

[livejournal.com profile] phantom_kay is the comm, but no one has posted since 2007. :( I did, however, reread Kay's book on the plane yesterday, so I'll gladly chat with you about it. :D

[identity profile] lacommunarde.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope you had fun and that the planes weren't too terrible. Thank you for the opportunity to talk with someone about PotO. I actually have a few questions that need answering: I'm planning a fic somewhat based on both Kay's and Leroux's characterizations of Erik that basically will be trying to explain some of Erik's stranger moments by saying he survived the Bloody Week of the Paris Commune, after which none of the survivors could really be considered sane. In order to write this, however, I need to come up with an answer to the question of what Erik's political opinions were and whether he would have taken a will-not-get-involved stance or a more active, fighting alongside the Communards stance. I have my own opinions on this, mostly based on Kay's characterization and a few based on the original as well, but I would very much like to know what your opinion on this matter are. What were Erik's opinions and how involved or standoffish was he about this matter?

Re: 108, 133

[identity profile] trinity-destler.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
YES! I couldn't even articulate it at the time (I was so mad), but you're right. They did emasculate him! He was just an impotent jerk with a sun burn in the movie; everything that makes Erik, Erik is either completely missing or so badly handled it might as well be. Not only that, Raoul got a serious upgrade in the process. I don't remember it too well any more, but I think he came off as less of an oblivious, well-meaning goof than he usually does.

Chucking out his history and taking the mystery out of him at the same time, they completely slaughtered Erik's character. I don't know, I froth with rage every time I remember watching it; I take this stuff kinda hard. I was trying to explain how wrong it was to everyone I knew as they were leaving. -.-;
