My first introduction into Phantom was through ALW - I had not seen a musical before up to that point in my life, and when it came to town when I was a kid I saw it with my mom and fell in love with it. I bought the cd immediately afterwards, and eventually picked up the Leroux novel, the Claude Rains movie, and the 1990 miniseries.
And while I liked all of them (especially the novel and miniseries) none of them were able to completely fill the magic the musical brought. When I heard about the movie coming out, I had been so excited. Finally, this was my chance to be able to see and own the musical and watch it whenever I wanted.
I saw it 5 times in the theatre, I liked it that much. Yes, there were things about it that I didn't care for (namely Erik's lack of disfiguration), but overall I enjoyed it.
And then I read the fan reaction and I was like, "Oh crap, am I somehow blind and shallow?" So I never came out and shared my like for the movie.
But I've come to terms with the fact that our experiences probably have a large effect our reactions. ALW's musical had special meaning to me when I was young and it carried on from there. I can see where people are coming from, however, with all the problems with the movie, so I don't hold anything against anyone. After coming down from my Phantom!movie high, I couldn't help but lol at all the fails. But I still love it and I hope no one holds anything against me for my opinion.
And as for the singing? I guess I'm just tone deaf b/c other than Emmy's inability to reach the high E(? was it?) and a couple of pitchy parts for Gerard in PotO, I didn't have any issues with the singing. And I loved Gerard's growling, rockish voice (shallow fangirl, I feel like a shallow fangirl, shit).
