I think, for some reason, worse-written fic often does a better job of accessing the direct, id-level things that are so appealing and unique to fic.

...Makes sense in a way, since fic that is written poorly is often enough written by someone who is not (and may not even wish to be) an experienced author, who just had this idea they really, really liked enough to write it "even though I'm not good at it". So maybe it was just a really, really exciting idea!

Granted the really exciting idea they had may have worked out better in the hands of someone who is a more polished writer - but on the other hand, maybe thinking too much and being more cautious would blunt some of the visceral stuff that made it appealing. There may be some things that just work out better when they're written straight from the heart with minimal worry about quality.

I totally get where you’re coming from! In all my years of reading fic, I’ve noticed that younger/new fic writers can have an enthusiasm for their fics that’s downright infectious. That doesn’t mean that the fics are always very good, of course. Or that older and more experienced writers don’t have any enthusiasm for their work. But it’s just a different kind than the kids and newbies who just have a fun idea in their head that they want to write down ASAP, and don’t overthink it. I’ve had a lot of fun reading some of these before! And sometimes the author’s notes they put in are such unedited streams of consciousness, that they’re just as fun as the stories, and really let you get to know the authors!

Yeah, I mean there's a lot of stuff out there that I really don't have any interest myself in reading, but I'm glad it's out there and that they're finding like-minded people who will encourage them to keep being creative! Even if it's not "quality", at least they're making something and having fun in a positive way. =)

This reminds me of my old forum days. I came across a terribly written fic but I was so highly entertained. The story was nonsensical, but it was high on drama and thinking back, I suppose it's this earnestness in the text where the author was passionate about the story that kept me invested.
