I don't watch this show, but I heard that season 2 tones that down so that the social commentary comes through a bit more.

Uh... no. Not really. I mean, it does go all in on Nazis=Bad, which is only strong social commentary by current standards, but apart from that it is the same trashfire garbage that fifteen year olds across the globe will say is what it means to be really grownup.

The comic is so much worse.

Well, it is a Garth Ennis project. Forced edginess and hating comics is kinda his thing.

I'm not normally into Edgelord EntertainmentTM, but I gotta say, I WILL thirstwatch this one (despite the show cutting the one sex scene I would have cared about).

Look. I felt like Season 1 was way too over the top. The following season tones it down a bit. I mean this is no hypercritical investigation of society (maybe watch Watchmen instead), but over time I got hooked to the characters (not Huey with his annoying ass, and frankly Starlight has grown on me a bit I'm not here for her either) -- the crew, quite honestly. And there were some genuinely good parts in the show too. I'm super excited Jensen Ackles has a new job, especially if he's gonna be villainous.

And if you watched SPN, you'll see this show makes a lot more sense when you learn Erik Kripke is behind it. Is it incredibly thoughtful and deep? No. Does it aim to be? Maybe. I'd argue they aim for it as much as an edgy comic can aim for finesse. But it's a fun show if you get into it. It features a lot of the bureaucracy that goes behind creating a "brand" for superheroes. It's appealing to a lot of people in the same way Marvel and DC movies are. But i don't blame you for not getting through season 1.

Well, I'll be the voice of descent and say I do find S1 thoughtful and intelligent storytelling. The fact that its dressed up in gore and vulgarity doesn't lessen that for me. I actually love that quality of it; it felt authentic to the narrative that it was presenting itself one way while actually being deceptively nuanced and complex.

This is really not much of a voice of dissent, considering The Boys has so many fans that OP considered their opinion secret worthy. There isn’t even really many people agreeing with them completely in the comments before yours.
