History of Fandom/Internet Youtube (Video Essayist)

(Anonymous) 2021-11-13 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Sort of inspired by yesterday's thread or secret, and maybe a week or two ago, but who are the video essayists you watch regarding fandom/internet things?

I'm trying to find people to listen to, and someone linked Lindsay Ellis yesterday. I have watched That one person who did a whole thing on an anime con/yaoi paddles (i can't remember their name, but I enjoyed that one).

Any recs?

For deep dives into fandom specifically, Sarah Z.

For media stuff, Lindsay Ellis, Big Joel, Folding Ideas, Lessons From The Screenplay, Pop Culture Detective, Nando V Movies. (I would say Nando V Movies is the lightest of the bunch, while Big Joel and Folding Ideas are the most weighty and philosophical.)

Oh! The history of the Yaoi paddle was done by Red Bard (if you're interested she also did a videos on the rise and fall of Tokyopop, a sequel more focused on Tokyopop's original mangas and the Ahegao print at conventions - as well as a few more on anime and video games).

I've recently gotten interested in a youtuber called Hazel
https://www.youtube.com/c/hazelll/videos
a lot of her videos focus on anime and video games - if you don't mind hour-ish long videos I would recommend 'The Unreleased Anime That Almost Changed History' and 'The Bizarre Rabbit Hole of Direct VHS Anime' (My favorite one was her video on Orel Moral, but she seems to have deleted that one).

Kenny Lauderdale who covers a lot of old/rare anime and Japanese shows (reccing Things That Might Be Anime video because that technicalities of what counts as an anime made me giggle a little)

Super Eyepatch Wolf has some really interesting videos for games, anime and various media - I really liked his Undertale and Simpsons videos.

There's a team who still have their channel up called 'Get in the Robot' before becoming 'Beyond the Bot' who have done a lot on anime and manga

Also the channel The Take https://www.youtube.com/c/thetake/videos
They have tons of essays on various media - I just finished watching the video on Jennifer's Body and Dysfunctional Families.

Seconding Red Bard. She always does a really thorough dive (while still being entertaining) into the topic, complete with showing her sources.
