Fair enough, if the adaptations are 100% faithful, but very few, if any, are. I've seen too many that dramatically change the source canon or characterization (for better or for worse), so I see no harm in theorizing in those situations. In fact, since I'm not a purist, I actually find it quite interesting to see how people interpret different things and if they end up being right with the adaptation, or if they pick up on things without even realizing it.

Seriously, this. And frankly, the longer/more convoluted (and thus more likely to lead to theorizing) the source canon is, the less likely the adaptation is to stick to it.

Good point, loose and unfaithful adaptations are one of the things I hadn’t really considered as much when I wrote the secret.

I was mostly referring to adaptations that are very much trying to be as faithful as possible. In particular, I was thinking about My Hero Academia when I decided to make this secret. As I’m one of the people who always reads the manga either before I see an anime adaptation I’m interested in, or binge all existing chapters after the first couple of episodes. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being an “anime only” person(same goes for anyone else who sticks to adaptations over source material) as I’ve stated. But I’m weak, and could never be patient enough to wait.

But while I did have faithful adaptations in mind, those aren’t as common as loose adaptations, or even in name only adaptations, tend to be. Especially outside of anime. So in that case, I get where you’re coming from. And I’m no purist either, just impatient.

Well, for me specifically, superhero comics are incredibly inaccessible and not something I will ever get myself to start reading.

For other things, depending on how the adaptation works, they might end up being red herrings.

Yeah I'm not reading 500 years of comic books (even if I could obtain them) just to explain some random quirk in the movies.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-15 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, same.

Plus, things are different in movie or TV canon from the comics anyway.

It's not like the adaptations are faithful to every detail in the source material.

Certainly goes for things like Game of Thrones, too.

Plus it's comics. There are at least three separate canon explanations for that quirk thanks to the power of retcon.

As a comic fan, I wouldn't say you need to either. Knowing the comic canon doesn't give me a greater knowledge of the movie plots or characters, it just means I can go 'ha neat!' at a little easter egg they throw in. Which I find fun but it's not necessary to enjoy comic-based adaptations.

I did put comics in as one of types of media I was talking about, but I honestly agree with you completely about them. They are inaccessible. And as others have also stated, there’s too many different interpretations and continuities to keep track of. I enjoy learning about comics and the characters in them, but I really don’t read much of them. I instead learn about them through YouTube channels dedicated to talking about comics, or those big book Compendiums that used to be popular in book stores. If there’s something or someone I want to know the more about after I’ve seen the movie/series, I’ll usually just Google it instead of actually reading the comic lol.

All that would to is change their theory into wondering if the adaptation will do the same thing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

OP

That’s a bit of a generalization. There is a fair amount of adaptations that try to be as faithful as possible(My Hero Academia is one such adaptation, and was the media I had in mind when I wrote the secret). And in those cases, there’s almost never the question of “will the adaptation cover this?”. So my point(if you can call it that) in the secret still stands that the answer might be already out there, and how I can’t relate to not trying to find out before making a public theory. That’s more a personal failing that I’m so impatient and overly curious though lol.

If the adaptation isn’t very faithful, which I’ve admitted to another anon is something I hadn’t really thought of while writing the secret(and I didn’t have a lot of room to add more words left anyways), then you’d be correct. But that’s not always the case.

I can't even keep myself from checking the fandom wikis for quick summaries of later entries. I mean yeah sure it could be different but I bet it won't be.

I get that completely lol! If there’s a lot of source material to get to, I’ll usually just Google what I want to know. Fandom wikis are life savers in this regard!

OT but that's a very cute dog.
