I disagree because I think, unlike with chicken nuggets, you reach a point of diminishing returns with making movies to a template. You have to keep coming up with new ideas to make within the template to keep things feeling fresh. You can't actually make the same movie over and over again - you have to come up with new jokes, new action scenes, new villains, new plot details. Even if they differ very little from the original, there has to be some difference.

And you generally use all the easiest, most obvious ideas within a given framework first. So now we're 26 movies deep into the MCU and we're really starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel coming up with ways to reconfigure the MCU structure and still have it be satisfying to people. And I think that's a large part of what people are responding to.

I also think, to some extent, living in the Internet age means that a lot of the audience gets fed up with a specific formula more quickly, and companies need to start zig-zagging more aggressively to keep up with them. But that's not really what's going on with the MCU.

Black Widow is the highest grossing movie of the year so far. I think it is still satisfying to people.

Of course it's true that many people still enjoy the MCU movies, and they're still a viable commercial property. At the same time, they've been much less successful critically, there's been much more cultural pushback against them from people who either aren't fans or have grown tired of them, and in terms of global box office they are much less dominant than they were at their peak. That doesn't mean that they're a disaster or anything. But I think it's a real thing that they're less popular than they were 10 years ago.

(also, I don't think Black Widow is the highest grossing movie of the year. No Time To Die is the highest-grossing English language movie, Shang-Chi has the highest domestic gross. Obviously Shang-Chi is also Marvel)

I think we need to wait for a year that doesn't have a pandemic in it to start being able to make valid comparisons.

I think that's a better analogy. They're not chicken nuggets, they're chicken nugget flavors that claim to all be unique and different. After the first several, it starts to get boring. After 20, you're desperately mashing random shit together just to make it something different and new.

I favor this theory a lot.

Nah, it is more that the little name big egos come into a pre established fandom and get all huffy when they can't lay down the law about what they think the fandom is supposed to be about. So they huff and they whine and they bitch and they say "everyone" is tired of it, when what they really just want is for everyone to bend to them instead of them adapting to pre existing norms. They might be the loudest voices, but they are not the majority voices.

I don't think that's accurate

Well you are half right.
