117. I don't get how slash is related to feminism at all. Isn't it just kind of... completely UNrelated? I mean women don't even play a role in slash since it's about men, right? How are women's (romantic, I assume) roles diminished if they just don't play a part in the romantic thing at all?

Are men diminished by femslash? Does femslash diminish men? No, in the same way that slash doesn't diminish women -- it's not that they're less important in the canon, it's that the fans of slash or femslash like to focus on certain characters (fanatical bashers/haters/people that deny characters exist/people that turn men/women into cardboard villains etc. excluded -- but that's not because they like slash or femslash, it's because they are brainless fantards). That's like asking WHERE ALL THE WOMENS AT!?!?! in a movie about, idk, soldiers at the front lines in WWII. There's just no reason for them to be there, a lot of the time.

Would it be better if all those people writing plotless smut fic wrote het or femslash instead of slash? It's not like there's epic quality writing going on usually anyway. Er, take all the random porn and sappy romance that fandom produces if you want, I don't think that really makes it any better for women. Well besides yay more porn featuring women.

Anyway, Abel is a "navigator" which is... apparently some strange race of futuristic human which only comes in blond, skinny, and uke, and as the name suggests, navigates a fighter... space... jet. Thing. We don't know WHY, he just DOES. We don't know why there even ARE fighter space jet things, or why they have to fight other fighter space jet things, or why anybody's even fighting at ALL, because clearly these things are not actually important to the plot or anything, but that's what he is.

He's paired up with a "fighter" (whose codename is Cain SURPRISE!!! minus the actual surprise) who supposedly does all the shooting and stuff from the fighter space jet that Abel pilots and is an AMAZING FIGHTER AND SO GOOD AT WHAT HE DOES GASP SHOCK, even though we never see him actually... you know... shoot anything. That's okay, though, because that doesn't have anything to do with the plot either. It's important that Abel is a navigator and Cain is a fighter purely because that means that they're paired up and have to share a room and Cain is a rapist and Abel secretly longs to be raped and then Cain rapes Abel and everyone is happy. Or something.

Okay, okay, there is no plot.

Yeah, seriously. Slash isn't misogynistic; misogyny is misogynistic. Likewise, writing het/female characters isn't feminist; feminism is feminist. Neither inherently has anything to do with prejudice or gender politics or whateverthefuck you want to call it.

I figure slash is related to feminism in that it's a transgressive writing genre constructed by women, for women, and there is nothing else in the world like it. Screw the characters (that's what they're there for), it's the real people in the culture, the ones doing the reading and writing, that matter.

Personally, and I say this as a guy, I love that japanese BL/yaoi/june/whatever fandom is marketed toward women. FUCK YEAH bring on the objectification! More men should be objectified in mainstream culture -- not that objectification is inherently good but I love that it's a tiny bit of equalization -- like if women must be objectified for porn let everyone else be objectified too!

Disclaimer: Nothing I say applies 100% of the time. This is a preemptive strike against idiots who don't read properly. You know there is at least a good 5% of anything. I know this, too.

Yaoi is not inherently sexist. In theory. However, in practice it becomes very, very sexist a lot of the time. Motivation, tone, and execution determine whether a fic is sexist. Tone is probably the most important one.

I believe it's because since a lot of women (who, let's face it, write the majority of yaoi) are not comfortable with females are sexual beings. A lot of fic writers are also fairly young, so that may be the cause as well. Yaoi would be an "acceptable" form of sexuality because there are no women in it. I generally dislike this kind of story. Yaoi isn't my preference to begin with, but I especially can't stomach those kind.

Then, there is the yaoi written for the love of yaoi. This is mighty fine with me.

Whenever I encounter a girl who says, "I only like/ ship/ read yaoi," I think that girl has some self loathing or esteem issues.
