Actually, it kind of does. Merlin eats SANDWHICHES, for god's sake.

What I don't get is all the fuss over 'historical accuracy' in this show anyway. HELLO? They didn't exactly have DRAGONS or MAGIC in the dark ages either. Merlin is a composite of vaguely-historical-come-high-fantasy-middle-english settings. What does the OP WANT? For it all to be in middle English? If it were THAT authentic no one but English Lit. geeks like me would be able to understand a WORD of the dialogue!

Well, I can't say I know much on the history of sandwiches. . .

I don't get why people are complaining about the historical accuracy either =/ This isn't a historical documentary, and the point of the show isn't to represent life as it was back in the day. It's practically a Merlin "high-school" AU. I mean, the reason why they put in our customs/language in settings where it doesn't actually fit is so the audience will actually be able to relate to it. They do it with sci-fi too. They HAVE to do it, if they want anyone to watch it.

The word 'sandwich' comes from the Earl of Sandwich. I don't have a problem with them eating them, because I refuse to believe that NO-ONE in the history of humanity ever stuck something between two slices of bread and ate it before he did, but... they use the word. -_-
I'm a Merlin-fan, but stuff like that still bugs me.

This is where assuming that the show is just being translated from some sort of Gaelic/Celtic/Old English mishmash is helpful. Because maybe he wasn't actually saying sandwich. Maybe he was saying "ǽt ǽgðer picgbréad."

Or "Defiler-of-the-Bread."

That's true, yeah, but... for some reason 'sandwich' bugs me more than most. Not sure why. Though nowhere near as much as killing Sir Bedivere, or GEOFFREY OF MONMOUTH.

I think it should at least feel like it takes place at some point between 400 and 1200, rather than feeling like somebody took the cast of a prime-time teen soap opera and dropped them in a National Park.
