117. I didn't read the secret as calling anyone a bad feminist. It instead seems to state that slash itself cannot be feminist, because it, as a function, removes female characters from the playing field.

I'm not sure if I agree with the absolutism in the secret, but I see where it's coming from. My university had a lecture series on fandom a few years ago, and one of the lecturers argued that slash is feminist because it provides a feminine space that's comprised (largely) of women writing for other women. Something about that did not sit right with me, since it is also a space where female characters are frequently bashed or ignored.

So I see this secret as reacting to that kind of debate, rather than accusing women of being bad feminists.

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, now that makes sense. Your lecturer obviously didn't do her research on fandom, if she thinks that it's something that doesn't reflect badly on women at times.

[identity profile] vivalana.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I think she was just looking at it from a very specific angle, and wanted to be as positive as possible while doing so. She also concentrated on Japanese-speaking fandoms, which might have less gender meta, or at least gender meta that's readily available.

I did point out that the Supernatural fandom was currently imploding, at the time.

[identity profile] chairman-wow.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm, yes, that does make sense. It's never occurred to me to approach slash from that angle, It makes more sense to me as a way to explore relationship angles (or t3h pretties), within the spectrum of which there is anything from feminists to "I haet girls because they break mah OTP I hope they die".

But I haven't been immersed in the world of slash for a while now. I tend to read fanfic for the character or world exploration these days, irrespective of m/m or otherwise. So perhaps I've missed trends.

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in a relatively insular fandom, so I don't know much about the general trends.

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can't see the "bad feminist" reading myself. The first thing the secret maker says is that you can be a slash fan and a feminist.

[identity profile] vivalana.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
And if I did read that into the secret, my hackles would be raised (whatever hackles are), because people who throw the accusation of "bad feminists" around lightly are one of my pet peeves.

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the secret maker could have worded it better (I would have said "prioritizes men" instead of saying it diminishes or ignores the presence of women) but the first statement implies that "bad feminist" never entered her (I assume) mind.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-08 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Wouldn't that apply to anything written by women, for women, not just slash?

[identity profile] vivalana.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
To be clear, I'm just reiterating the lecturer's argument, rather than claiming it as my own. I think that a large part of the lecturer's case also rested in the the communal space of fandom. So a letter written by a woman for a woman probably wouldn't apply. But other fandom genres, like het or gen, would likely apply according to the lecturer's definition.

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I think the problem with that (with the overall fandom approach, not what you're saying) is that the "feminist because it's written for women by women" only gets applied to slash, not the other genres. If it were "fandom/fanfic is feminist because it's a communal gathering place and way for women to express themselves with minimal repercussions" (or something along those lines), instead of it only ever coming up as a defense of slash (or at least, that's the only way I ever see it) then the secretmaker's concerns would likely be addressed.
