116. Being American doesn't automatically mean that someone is stupid, anymore than being from any other country makes someone stupid. That being said, American executives do have a tendency to think that Americans can't watch foreign films, which REALLY doesn't help things. But it doesn't mean all Americans are stupid--just that the majority of execs seem to think we are.

150. I'm still in love with that movie, and I wish it was coming out on DVD quickly enough for me to do my Intro to Film Arts final paper on it. But I think it's not. Drat.

116. By recognizing that stereotypes are not reality? OTOH, we have you at least to show us that some Americans are stupid.

I think a large part of the stereotype is caused by the fact that the average American tends not to be very aware of other cultures and international goings-on (and seeing as the country takes up half a continent and it takes a ridiculous effort to find world news on the TV there, how should they be?), and so when they talk to people from other countries their ignorance can easily be taken for stupidity.

It's a mixture of some truth (thanks to our crappy school systems and national arrogance/ignorance), along with the prevalence of our media in other cultures perpetuating stereotypes like the dumb dad/ditzy blonde...and maybe a bit of irritation over how overwhelming our influence is in the world currently. I'm not denying that we have stupid people in America, just that everyone that's American is automatically stupider than the rest of the world. I don't think generalizations of any culture is a good thing, even if it's somewhat deserved--it's not like there aren't stupid (and smart!) people in Britain, or South Africa, or Japan, or Brazil, or New Zealand or wherever. Stupidity is a worldwide problem.

I do think that all Americans really need to get out of their "America" boxes and go spend some time in another country for a week or two if they have the means. Even if it's Mexico or Canada. I've spent some time in foreign countries and it really helps you to realize that America isn't the center of the universe, and that there's both good and bad things about our culture. And I'm all for people in the U.S.A. taking the time to enjoy media from other countries other than our own, rather than remaking it so it can be "understood" by us. (We're not the only country that does that, however! When I was in India I couldn't help but notice there's a decent amount of Bollywood films that are simply remakes of American films with musical numbers.)

143. Oh good, I'm glad. XD I haven't been this stunned since I realized nobody on my flist had seen It's A Wonderful Life in its entirety. (Not that it's the BEST MOVIE EVAR!!1 just...sort of a classic.)

Unfortunately, though, a lot of people DON'T have the means. It's not all that easy to even visit Canada or Mexico if you live don't live near the border or can't afford a plane ticket. I know that I, and the majority of people I know, would be ecstatic at the chance to visit another country even for a few days, but I can barely afford the plane ticket from my university to my home in another state, much less a ticket across oceans.

That said, I agree that our own media perpetuating our stereotypes and assuming we want everything "Americanized" is doing nothing whatsoever to help us. There's a lot we're not given the chance to learn because somewhere along the line it's decided we'd wouldn't be able to understand it, anyway, which is just not the case. I'm dying for some other culture, here!

Gosh, you're right! Stereotypical Americans must be totally what we're like! And, like, as a Californian, like, I'm totally like a fucking moron who wears a teeny bikini everywhere and is crazy-tan! And I am like, living among all the Hollywood STARS! Like, OMG, right? Teehee, it's SO true! :)

Because, like, EVERYONE thinks that Americans are like, imbeciles! And like, if EVERYONE thinks it, like, it must be right, right? OMG! Dude, you are like, on to something.

And that something, is, like, my last fucking nerve. :D
