It's what most Brits call Americans. After all you still call us Limeys.

The only time I hear a Brit called Limey is either by a Brit making a joke, or maybe once every 2 years. The word evolved a while ago, get with the program ): Every time I hear it I think you're making fun of someone from New York.

[identity profile] eleanorb.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
Brits never use Limey. But I have heard it multiple times from Americans, here and on loads of other sites.

We do? News to me.

Re: 116

[identity profile] kimchiburger.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? We just usually say "British people" or something. I've only heard the term "Limeys" from Yugioh the Abridged Series.

That's what I was going to say. XD Which is even funnier because Y:TAS is made by British guy.

Also, YAY Natsume! ♥

...no. No, we don't.

Re: 116

[identity profile] eleanorb.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard/seen it dozens of times from Americans, even on this very board, and as regularly as it was 20-30 yeaars ago.

Re: 116

I'd love to see links to the comments because I read this site every day and haven't seen it used YET.

Admittedly I may have missed comments made after I leave hence the asking for links.

No links? Didn't happen and you're just being a buttsore fucker.

Re: 116

[identity profile] eleanorb.livejournal.com 2009-03-09 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
Wow! You read every comment? You must have far too much time on your hands.

you're just being a buttsore fucker

No idea what this means. Oh, perhaps that means that not everyone shares the same slang terms.

116

[identity profile] ballista-knight.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
I have never heard that term in my seventeen years of (American!) life.

Careful with those generalizations, there.

Re: 116

[identity profile] eleanorb.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
I meant 'you' as in many Americans in my experience. Perhaps it's dying out in your generation but i've been hearing it from Americans for the last 30+ years.

Re: 116

(Anonymous) 2009-03-08 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
wankwankbutthurtwank

and it's not like you guys don't use yanks every day for the last 30+ years and STILL use it in your younger generations.

so I guess two wrongs make a right, huh?

Re: 116

(Anonymous) 2009-03-08 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait...where's the butthurt? Aren't they just saying that they're familiar with Limey=slang for English person? I'm American and I've heard it. Not that often, and usually in a jokey way (i.e., referring to an English person as a "limey bastard" without really meaning it) but I know the word. I've also heard "Yanks" to refer to Americans. (And "Yankee" to refer to Northeaster Americans as opposed to Southerners.)

Re: 116

[identity profile] vivalana.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Canadian here. We have very similar slang and diction to Americans, and I'm also pitching in to say "Whaaaa...?"

Like, maybe if you had Lime disease. Or were lime of colour. Or something.

I think you're called "English" or the Brits, here.

Re: 116

[identity profile] eleanorb.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 09:49 am (UTC)(link)
It's historical (just like 'Yanks' is).

Re: 116

[identity profile] vivalana.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
You said "still." Still. As in now. I know "Yanks" is historical, but that wasn't what you were saying.

Re: 116

[identity profile] eleanorb.livejournal.com 2009-03-09 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
Forgive my Anglicisms - It has historical roots and Americans in my experience use it a lot, is that clearer? Just as many Brits and Aussies use Yanks, which is both a historical and a current usage.

Re: 116

(Anonymous) 2009-03-08 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
We *do*? What the hell is a limey? Why wasn't *I* informed?

It sounds like an effin' soft-drink to me.

Thanks for telling me about my country's slang, though! As an American, I am naturally woefully ignorant of such things. As I am in regards to most things. Of course.

Re: 116

[identity profile] eleanorb.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
I've lived in the US for years and it's still the term a lot of my American friends use. Yes, it's historical, like Yank is, and maybe it's dying out amongst the younger generation. But, as I posted above, I've been hearng it from a lot of Americans for 30+ years.
