122. He's not exactly doing a minstrel show. He wasn't making fun of or exploiting black people, he was making a comment on a certain type of actor who gets... well a bit too into the role. I do think that there SHOULD have been some kind of outcry because surely not all people would get the subtler points beyond the dark makeup. The blackface was SUPPOSED to be controversial. Maybe the target audience was too young and/or ignorant to know about the history. Maybe people just don't care anymore. There should at least be discussion. If there were, OP probably would understand the huge difference between the two portrayals.

I got that, really I did. And for the most part I found Tropic Thunder to be hilarious RDJ included. But the fact that they nominated him for an Oscar for that and EVERYBODY'S OKAY WITH THAT, is what really annoys me. I'm a live and let live kinda black person but there was something about the lack of "excuse me hollywood wtf are you doing?" that bothered the fuck outta me. Maybe people don't care anymore which probably is a good thing because we as a people are learning to let shit go and understand what's supposed to be funny (RDJ) and what's really offensive (Don Imus and his nappy headed ho's remark).
tl;dr: RDJ didn't offend me, the Oscar nomination did.

The Oscar nom's especially ironic given...wasn't that totally the joke of his character? He was playing the "brilliant actor" who would "disappear into the role." But the black character he played was actually ridiculous, especially when presented alongside the actual black man. But the joke was that his character was getting lauded for brilliantly portraying a black man.

Granted, one could say that the character he was really playing was blond, blue-eyed Kirk Lazarus who *was* a real person the way that Osirus wasn't...but I don't feel really confident that Hollywood was nominating him for that. I would not be surprised if they were nominating him for playing Osirus the parody of a black man instead of Kirk Langstrom the parody of the method actor and white guy who lectures black guys on what it's like to be black...? Does that make sense? You have to wonder if the academy got the jok or is just the joke.

I see what you're saying. RDJ's character was the extreme method actor going to extreme lengths to portray a role and you're saying the Academy gave him that Oscar nod as a joke because that's why Kirk Lazarus got into blackface in the first place. To show how edgy he was.

Problem is, I don't think the Academy has that kind of sense of humor.

I wasn't really saying they gave it to him as a joke, actually. It was that I suspect they gave it to him for playing Osirus (which was a bad performance because that was a really shallow character--there was a minstral show quality to him) instead of Kirk the clueless white guy. Like, the only times Osirus becomes a real person is when he's talking about acting--iow, when he's Kirk talking in his "Osirus voice."

So, like, the academy is exactly the same as the fictional academy in the movie. Like you say, they don't have that kind of sense of humor. They might not have really gotten the joke at all. Like they think he brilliantly played a black man and a white man in the movie when really he just played a white man in and out of blackface.
