As far as I'm aware, weeaboos are people who think Japan is a magical land of rainbows and candy where everything is cool, and think it's awesome to use words like 'kawaii~' in normal, English conversation. A few of the people in my Japanese class are like that and it's just quite... embarassing, really.

Haha, yeah, "idiot" works very well, too. XD I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to learn Japanese because of anime/manga, because who doesn't want to read or see something in the original language, all subtleties intact, but I don't get how someone can idolise an entire country that way. The wilful ignorance of it sort of pisses me off, sometimes.

I was referring to the sort of crazed fan whose ONLY reason for being interested at all is because of their fandom (though this seems to be the beginning step to weeaboo behaviour). Anime/manga is a fine reason the way you describe it. LOL

The idolisation of a country is a bit extreme, especially when it isn't your country or your heritage. That goes beyond finding a culture fascinating, I think.

Yeah, it's fine being interested in a culture, but every society has its faults. You can like Japan, but at least acknowledge that they are a pretty sexist society and that their economy is a bit fucked, as well as the good things (like robots). Otherwise you're just 'studying' the culture of your own little fantasy dreamland.

Haha that is pretty amazing! Incidentally, my other language is German! (My dad's side of the family is German.)

But yes, if you are going to learn about a country and are interested in it, at least admit that no one is perfect. (Though it is interesting to note that the time line in my German textbook goes straight from '1939 - Hitler invades Poland', to '1945 - Hitler is assassinated and WWII ends.')

Ooh! My first language is German. Aber mein Wortschatz und meine Rechtschreibung lassen eher zu Wünschen übrig, da ich seit fast 10 Jahren in England lebe, und nur mit meinen Eltern noch Deutsch spreche.

I never went to school in Germany for long enough to get to that part of History. XD It took me ages to get rid of inherited WWII guilt, though. But I enjoy a good Nazi joke these days. *uses hilariously inappropriate icon*

I'm at the third level of German classes now (so I've taken 100, 101, and 102), but I'm retaking 102. I was ill for most of the Fall semester so I didn't learn a whole lot XP I would consider myself functional, but not quite fluent, and my reading and writing are much better than my speaking and listening. My grandmother only spoke German as a child, but when her family came to Canada, they only spoke English. Now she doesn't speak any at all.

I know what you mean. My family got kicked out of Germany around the 17th century (for being Protestant), settled in Russia, and was in Canada by the 1930s, but I still feel a bit of guilt over WWII.

I like the icon. It is wonderfully inappropriate. I have one that has a picture of Hitler and says 'epic fail.' I was worried when I first used it, but no one seemed too offended.
