For some reason, a certain faction of slashers (those inclined to write meta) seem to like to navel-gaze about why they write slash. Just check how many entries the "slash" tag brings up on metafandom. It always makes me roll my eyes a little to see all the various "feminist" and "intellectual" theories they give for why they like what they like.

But I agree with the OP that there is nothing about slash that makes it more feminist than any other fanfiction, or more deep, or more complex, or more intellectual, etc.

I could write about why I love het, but I am more of the "I like what I like because I like it" mindset.

Ah, well maybe that's why I've never run into that specific mindset -- I stay out of meta for the most part. I'd say that if someone does find it empowering, then good for them, but I'd really have a hard time buying into slash as specifically "feminist." I mean, I do understand the argument for it. I just don't know if I agree. Porn is porn. Women writing porn that gets them off at all is pretty nifty, but I don't see how slash is so special that it gets the feminist label. I'd be more inclined to say it's a result of feminism, not a feminist thing in and of itself.

But yeah, I'm with you on that "I like what I like because I like it." Especially when it comes to what people find hot, it's really hard to put it into words. Sometimes there aren't even reasons. It just is. People shouldn't need to try to justify it.

Wow, were we separated at birth? LOL

I don't mind someone navel-gazing at why THEY like to write something. It's when they transfer from the local to the global and start telling me why I like to write something that I tend to get crabby.
