To be honest, there's pretty much no other explanation on why Melanie was so hung up on Scarlett, even before they escaped Atlanta. Scarlett fucked up so badly, so often, but Melanie turned the blindest eye to it, all her life. It seemed to me that she had no illusions about anyone (even her husband) except Scarlett. She could do no wrong in Melanie's eyes.

I think the novel cannot be read from any other point of view but that Melanie loved Scarlett fiercely, although most people would see it as platonic. Romantic would actually make more sense though.
