And to be honest, I tend to find such scenes awkward. As soon as they have characters saying 'do not' and 'can not' and 'will not' instead of 'don't' and 'can't and 'won't', I go '>_<'. It just doesn't feel natural. In what way is more ordinary, easy-going dialogue 'ruining their own language'?
Also, while I'm not an expert on Athurian lengend, I know a fair bit about it, I don't see how Melrin is that much worse than most interpretations.

It obviously is a bigger issue to the author.
If people are going to complain about how language or bad spelling or grammar is going to pull them from a story (fanfic or even published media), then how is this any different?

It's not the same as bad grammar, though, because none of it's actually wrong. There's the odd anachronism, but they're mostly played for laughs.
The way I see it, if you're going to complain about Merlin, complain about the bigger issues (*cough* GEOFFREY OF MONMOUTH *cough*).
